MONARCH MEN'S SOCCER FALL TO SCRANTON 2-1
WILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College men's soccer team was not able to recover from allowing two first half goals in a 2-1 loss to University of Scranton on a rainy Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.
The Royals improved to 3-0 on the season with the victory while the Monarchs fell to 1-2. The game marked the first meeting between the programs since Scranton left the Freedom Conference for the Landmark Conference in 2007.
Scranton controlled possession for much of the first 11 minutes of the game while taking five shots. The Royals broke through the Monarch defense in the 30th minute when Jeremy Mammen sent a cross into the box from the right side which Jon Roberts one timed into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Christian Savino doubled the lead eight minutes later when his long range shot deflected into the back of the net to give Scranton a 2-0 halftime lead.
In the second half the Monarchs came out strong and got on the board in the 52
nd minute when
Kevin Mazol sent a cross into the box from the left side that
Liam McLoughlin was able to put into the back of the net for his third goal of the season. The teams played back and forth with the Monarchs maintaining possession for much of the next 20 minutes. In the 81st minute McLoughlin had an opportunity to even the score but his open shot from the right side of the box sailed high.
Scranton outshot King's 12-5 and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman
Liam McLoughlin continued his impressive start to his career with his third goal of the season while
Kevin Mazol recorded an assist.
Owen Geedey made two saves in goal.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Huntingdon to face Juniata College at 7:30 p.m.
