EDWARDSVILLE, PA (October 17, 2018) -- Senior forward
Kelsey Gabriele tallied her 100th career point Wednesday afternoon for the King's College field hockey team, but wasn't enough as host Wilkes University picked up a 5-3 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory in play from Schmidt Stadium.
The milestone goal came with King's down 1-0 at 18:25 into the game, as she stole the ball at the top of the circle and blasted a shot into the left side of the cage to deadlock the score at a goal apiece. She became just the seventh player in program history with 100 career points, and the first since Alyssa Monaghan in 2015. It was also her 12th goal of the season and 42nd of her career, while her 12 tallies are just one behind her 13 scored as a junior.
The tallycame only 1:25 after Wilkes had opened the scoring as Maddie Kelley scored a transition goal on a loose ball in the circle. The Colonels regained their lead in the 31st minute on a nice penalty corner set-up, as Haley Gayoski fired in a backhand shot off a pass from Lauren Shiplett for the 2-1 lead. The lead wouldn't last though despite heavy rain and wind rolling in, as sophomore
Jolee Treslar corralled a rebound off a
Hannah Robbins shot and flung it past WU keeper Dallas Kendra for her fifth goal of the season.
The game looked like it would enter halftime with a 2-2 score line but Wilkes made a push and despite a defensive save from
Jennifer Smalley for King's, the hosts were able to take the lead with 25 seconds left in the period on a goal from Lauren Baldwin.
After intermission, the hosts used the momentum from their late goal to double the lead to 4-2, as Ali Dunn scored on a rebound of a Madison Ensley shot for her sixth of the season. Only 2:06 later the Colonels would score another goal on a penalty corner to force a timeout from the Monarchs. After the stoppage, King's responded with a push of its own but Kendra made two big saves including a point-blank stop on Gabriele with 28 minutes to play.
After the Monarchs fended off the Colonels next attack thanks to saves from
Dervla Mcerlean and a defensive stop from
Natalie Muscatell, King's chipped away at the scoreline as Treslar scored her second of the game to make it 5-3. The sophomore was in the right spot, as a shot from Robbins snuck through the Wilkes goalkeeper's pads and Tresler pushed across the line for the score at 62:07.
King's had a couple more chances late, but Kendra made saves to deny Treslar and Gabriele to secure the win for the Colonels (8-7, 4-1 MAC Freedom).
The Monarchs outshot Wilkes on the day 22-21 in an exciting game, though Wilkes earned a 7-4 edge in penalty corners. King's starter
Brianne Maluda made four saves, while Mcerlean allowed no goals and chalked up three stops in 27:39 of action. Gabriele led all players with 11 shot attempts, and Kendra made a game-high 12 saves for the Colonels.
King's (8-9, 3-2 MAC Freedom) still holds its own destiny in the MAC Freedom playoff hunt and will look to jump back into the win column Friday evening at 7 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium, hosting FDU-Florham (12-3, 4-0 MAC Freedom) in a league tussle.
