WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 20, 2018) –
Emma Baumbusch scored 1:24 into the second half to lead the King's College women's soccer team to a huge 1-0 victory over Delaware Valley on Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.
Prior to the match, the Monarchs (6-8-0, 3-3 MAC Freedom) honored their two seniors and four juniors who were playing their last conference home match of their careers. Sophomores Baumbusch and
Natalie Poulton made sure seniors
Allison Andrew and
Abby Smith along with junior physician assistant majors
Jess Schenfeld,
Danielle Putnam,
Anna Lacalamita, and
Sam Nogula would have a Senior Day victory.
The victory was especially gratifying for the Monarchs as they moved up from sixth to four in the conference standings and are back to controlling their own destiny in qualifying for the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament.
KC out-shot Delaware Valley (4-11-0, 1-5 MAC Freedom) 22-3 in the match and had a 9-3 corner kick advantage. It took the Monarchs five minutes to settle in before unleashing on the Aggies.
Stephanie Corea and
Breanna Jacinto missed wide left before Jacinto put the first shot on goal in the 12th minute. Following a corner kick Jacinto received the ball back on the wing and sent a shot in on goal that Haley Young grabbed in net for her first save of the half.
The Monarchs put pressure on the Aggie defense by controlling possession and forcing Young to make saves. Putnam, Baumbusch, and Lacalamita all put shots on goals that Young was able to keep out of the back of the net. King's kept pressing for the first goal of the match but following three off-targets shots Young made two more saves on shots by Putnam and
Alyssa Macher. Macher had another good look right before the half expired but Young made her seventh save of the day to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
The Aggies opened the new period with possession of the ball and marched down the field before Alyssa Gibson had her shot blocked by the Monarchs defense. King's went on the counterattack and earned a corner kick at the other end of the field. Poulton kicked the ball into the box from the left side finding Baumbusch in the middle of the box. Baumbusch took one dribble for space and then found the back of the net for her first goal of the season and second career game-winning goal.
Emily Harrington had her shot blocked a few minutes later setting up a corner kick for the Monarchs. DVU was able to fend off three corner kicks by the Monarchs without allowing a shot. Andrew just missed a Senior Day goal in the 70th minute when he header off a Jacinto corner went wide right, just missing the post.
King's dominated possession while Corea and Baumbusch had their attempts at goal late in the match saved by Young. The defense put together one of their more dominating performances of the year as the Aggies were allowed just three total shots and one on goal. It is the least amount of shots King's has allowed all year. The last time King's allowed three or less shots in a game was last year's Senior Day 3-0 victory over Neumann. Schenfeld recorded her sixth career shutout needing to make just one save in goal.
The Monarchs have one more conference match remaining and just need a win at Eastern next Saturday or a draw and a FDU-Florham loss to Wilkes to clinch the fourth and final spot in the MAC Freedom Tournament. The Devils and Eagles sit two points behind the Monarchs in the conference standings following losses to Misericordia and DeSales today. FDU-Florham will host Wilkes on Friday night in their regular season finale.
King's will be back at McCarthy Stadium on Tuesday night hosting Keystone College in their final non-conference match of the year. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. against the Giants.
