Monarchs Celebrate Senior Night With 7-0 Victory Over Delaware Valley

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 20, 2018) – The King's College men's soccer team clinched a top two seed in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament with a 7-0 victory over Delaware Valley on Saturday night at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.

The Monarchs (10-4-2, 5-1 MAC Freedom) put together one of their most dominating performances of the season on Senior Night against the Aggies (3-12-0, 0-6 MAC Freedom). KC did not allow a shot all match while taking 26 of their own putting 16 on goal. King's also had a 15-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Prior to the match the Monarchs honored Owen Geedey, Steven Grebe, Zach Wolcott, Abdullah Alsubaie, Matt Giangiulio, and Jason Hoops who were playing their final regular season match at McCarthy Stadium for King's. Their teammates made sure they would have at least one more match on the home turf.

The Monarchs went right after the Aggies from the start earning back-to-back corners in the fifth minute. DVU was able to keep King's without a shot on both. Wolcott made Josh Jarrett make his first save of the match a minute later with a rocket from just outside the box. Alastair Dinnan put the Monarchs on the board in the 11th minute on a perfectly placed shot into the lower right from the left side. Geedey recorded the first assist of his career with a big punt to start the play. Fabio Massa received the punt on King's offensive side of the field heading the ball up to Dinnan. Dinnan did the rest knocking the ball past an oncoming keeper and into the back of the net.

Delaware Valley blocked King's next two shots by Nik Verma and Massa. Massa picked up his own rebound and fired a bullet right at Jarrett for a save. Dinnan just missed on a second goal in the 28th minute when his attempt sailed just high of the crossbar.

In the 32nd minute the Monarchs drew a foul in the box setting up August Axtman for his third penalty kick attempt in as many matches. Axtman nailed home the attempt for the sixth time this year and his team-leading seventh goal. A couple minutes later Alexander Showalter looked to increase the lead when his shot got past Jarrett in net. However, a Aggie defender was able to get a foot on the ball knocking it away.

Massa made it 3-0 with his third goal of the season in the 52nd minute with a shot from the left wing into the lower right on an assist by Wolcott from the left side. The Monarchs kept the pressure on the Aggie keeper as Massa, Wolcott, Quentin Szeker-Cortes, and Dinan put shots on goal in the following 10 minutes of action. In the 66th minute KC scored again when Alexander Showalter sent a cross from the right side into Wolcott. Wolcott headed the ball to Dinnan who one-timed the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the match. Not even two minutes later King's made it 5-0 when the Aggies headed a corner kick by Szeker-Cortes into the back of the net for an own goal. It is the second time this season the Monarchs have received an own goal off a corner kick.

The goals kept coming for the Monarchs as Will Brack scored his second goal of the year in the 75th minute when Pat Holton sent a through pass to the left wing. Brack found the inside of the left post to give KC a 6-0 lead. Jacob Hopfenspirger rounded out the scoring with 39 seconds remaining with his first career goal on a header off a corner kick from the left side by Kevin Kolaski. The assist was also the first point for Kolaski.

Pat Hughes and Geedey split time in net as Hughes played the final 22:42 of the match as King's earned their 10th shutout of the season. Jarrett finished with eight saves in goal for the Aggies.

The victory sets up a much-anticipated matchup next Saturday in the regular season finale as the Monarchs travel down to St. Davids to face Eastern University at 3 p.m. on Olson Field. The Eagles are undefeated in conference play at 6-0 and were ranked third in the first NCAA Regional Rankings released this week. A victory over the Eagles will give the Monarchs the top seed for the conference tournament while becoming the first-ever Regular Season Champion in the conference.
