WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 24, 2018) - The King's College field hockey team concluded the 2018 season as they fell to the DeSales Bulldogs 6-0 on a brisk Wednesday evening at McCarthy Stadium.
The Bulldogs were the first to threaten, but a shot by Christie Hansen in the seventh minute was deflected wide by
Dervla Mcerlean.
Maryrose Mauro played a role early, and caused a turnover while DeSales tried to get something going in the ninth minute.
The Monarchs tried to take advantage of Mauro's gamely defense. However, Hannah Williams of DeSales deflected a pass at midfield that fell right at teammate Christie Hansen. Then Hansen passed to Williams and back to Hansen. Hansen then found Kylie Honnick-Payne, and Payne found an open corner in front of the goalpost, which resulted in her seventh goal of the year in the 10
th minute, putting the guests on the board first.
DeSales then controlled possession of the ball, where they drew two penalty corners afterwards. The second of the two corners, which happened in the 14
th minute, led directly to Honnick-Payne's second score of the evening. She scored off a deflection save by King's goalkeeper
Dervla Mcerlean in the 14
th minute to double the score to 2-0.
The Bulldogs threatened again in the 20
th minute as they drew four penalty corners in a 92 second span, the fourth of which Honnick-Payne found Madison Brader wide open, who scored on a scorcher from well outside the crease to make it 3-0 in the 19
th minute. Brader's goal was her second on the season.
DeSales then threatened again, in which after Mcerlean made a deflection, but it was right at Hannah Williams' direction, where she scored her ninth goal of the year in the 29
th minute. The Bulldogs outshot the Monarchs 12-3, and out-took penalty corners 10-2 in the first half.
Dervla Mcerlean made four saves in the first half before
Brianne Maluda took over in the second half.
DeSales continued its hot stretch in the second half. After playing evenly through the first 15 minutes of the half, Hansen found Polashock wide open in front of the net, in which Polashock netted her second goal of the game, and her fourth of the year with 20 minutes remaining to make it 6-0.
The Monarchs then controlled possession for the remainder of the game, but the DeSales' defense held gamely, as they drew timely fouls that prevented King's from advancing the ball as they wished. DeSales finished with a 13-6 edge in shots, earning 11 penalty corners to the six for the Monarchs.
The Monarchs finished the 2018 season with an 8-11 overall mark, while ending MAC Freedom action at 3-4. Meanwhile, DeSales improved to 9-7 overall and 6-1 in MAC Freedom play.
