WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 27, 2018) – Senior goalkeeper
Jake Tugnutt was strong on Saturday for the King's College men's ice hockey team as he made 39 saves, but two goals from Mitchell Parsons lifted visiting Brockport to a 2-0 non-conference victory in action from Revolution Ice Centre.
The Monarchs played very well defensively in the opening period, funneling shots to Tugnutt and allowing him to get great looks at the puck. Brockport had the game's first power play at 3:01 of the opening period, but Tugnutt made a save while
Eric Menninger and
Isaac Cirinna blocked a pair of shots to help kill the penalty off.
King's had a chance with 9:32 left in the first period after a high sticking penalty on Brockport, but none of the three shots from the Monarchs found the net. The second period saw the Golden Eagles get on the board after Brockport went on the power play 3:30 into the stanza. On the first shot of the power play, Parsons scored from Corey Tam and Hunter Laslo for a power play strike to make the score 1-0.
Minutes later King's was back on the penalty kill at 5:15 of the second period, as
Orion Linnehan was whistled for boarding. The Monarchs fended off three attempts from the Golden Eagles, but Parsons cashed in on the power play with help from Connor Hutchins and Ryan Romeo to make the score 2-0. That was the last time that Tugnutt would be beat though, as he made 11 stops in the second period to send the game to the third still within reach.
In the third period, Tugnutt made 15 saves including an incredible glove stop with just under three minutes to play. Minutes before that, King's had a great chance as a Cirinna attempt whizzed just high of the cross bar. Linnehan had another solid chance as well, but it wouldn't go as the Golden Eagles held on for the win.
Christian La Croix led the team with three shots, while
Luciano Bucci won nine of his 14 face-offs while
Jamie Lukas was 8-for-14.
Cameron Anklewich was also stellar at the face-off dot, picking up wins on eight of his 11 chances.
King's is out on the road next Friday for its first contest away from Revolution Ice Centre, as the Monarchs head to Pine Valley, NY for the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) opener November 2 at 7 p.m. from the Murray Athletic Center.
