PITTSON, PA (October 27, 2018) –
Emma Zeveney came one save shy of her career-high on Saturday night as the King's College women's ice hockey team fell to visiting SUNY Oswego 10-1 at Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.
The Lakers came into the game with fresh legs playing in their first game of the season and jumped on top of the Monarchs (1-1) with three goals in a four-minute span to take a 3-0 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the first period. Oswego was called for a hooking penalty at 15:37 and King's took advantage of their first extra-woman opportunity of the night as
Mary Deyell scored her first goal of the season off an assist by
Kellie Munro 1:08 into the power-play. The
Lakers responded with another goal to take a 4-1 lead into the first break.
Oswego increased their lead to 5-1 1:17 into the second period on a goal by Eryn Stewart. Zeveney and the Monarch defense did a great job keeping the Lakers off the board for nearly the rest of the period until Sara Cruise found the back of the net on a power play with 1.1 seconds left. The power play goal was King's first given up this year after killing all 10 power play opportunities yesterday against Wilkes and the first three opportunities against the Lakers. KC was 1.1 seconds from the end of the period and two seconds from killing off another opportunity.
The Lakers scored four times in the third period on goals by Avery Webster at 6:02, Stewart at 11:17, Skylar Bryne at 15:23, and Kate Randazzo at 18:00. Stewart finished the game with a hat trick and two assists for five points. Webster had two goals and two assists for Oswego while Madison Byrne recorded three assists. Seven different Lakers scored and 11 had at least one point.
Zeveney faced 67 shots and made 57 saves. She recorded 20 saves in the first period, 26 in the second, and 11 in the third.
Gracen Mahoney led King's on faceoffs winning 14 of 22 attempts.
Erin King led the Monarchs in shots with three while
Tessa Schaefer-Flynn and Deyell had two each.
Both teams committed five penalties for 10 minutes and were 1-for-5 on the power play. Cassie Shokar made nine saves in net for the Lakers while facing 10 shots.
KC will return to action next weekend when they open United Collegiate Hockey Conference play against Utica College. The Monarchs will host the Pioneers on Saturday and Sunday at Revolution Ice. Saturday's game will be at 7:15 p.m. and Sunday's first puck drop will be at 2 p.m. in Pittston.
