PITTSTON, PA (November 3, 2018) -- Sophomore goalkeeper
Kiva Sierra Stoltz was once again magnificent for the King's College women's ice hockey team Saturday evening, making 37 saves but visiting Utica College used two second-period goals to pull away in a 4-0 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) win in play from the Revolution Ice Centre.
Stoltz made sprawling save after sprawling save, and was aided by a defense that blocked a ton of shots in front. The Monarchs had the game's first good chance to score as
Caitlin Redden had a shot blocked on the power play and seconds later a shot by
Gracen Mahoney was stopped.
The Pioneers (3-0-0, 1-0-0 UCHC) grabbed the lead at 11:50 of the opening stanza, as Taylor Dion scored on a scrum in front, tapping in a pass from Ricki Haab for the opening lead. After intermission, Elizabeth Dohner and Rebecca Brown tallied for the visitors to make the score 3-0 after 40 minutes of play.
King's played very well in the third period, and showed some fight against Utica not backing down and clearing the zone very well. Despite the score, the Monarchs showed heart killing off a 5-on-3 for over 30 seconds and finished the game 5-of-6 on the penalty kill thanks to great work from
Meghan Mietlicki and
Erin King on the back end.
Mahoney led the way for the Monarchs on the shot board with three, also winning 12 of her 22 face-offs on the evening. Freshman
Tessa Schaefer-Flynn was also solid at the dot with eight face-off wins out of 14 taken.
The Monarchs (1-2-0, 0-1-0 UCHC) will host Utica again Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in a rematch of Saturday's tilt in play from the Revolution Ice Centre.
