WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 3, 2018) -- The King's College field hockey team hosted a non-conference contest with Alvernia University Wednesday evening from McCarthy Stadium on a chilly October night in Wilkes-Barre, PA, but the visiting Golden Wolves potted two second-half goals to earn a 2-0 win.
The Monarchs had the first real chance of the game in the fifth minute, but a
Kelsey Gabriele chance was thwarted by Emma Beamesderfer. That would turn out to be the only shot taken by King's in the first half, as Alvernia went on the offensive.
The Golden Wolves appeared to have taken the lead in the 17th minute on a Victoria Strasser shot but senior defender
Taylor Runo made a great defensive save to keep the game scoreless. After Runo's save, Strasser had another chance but it went wide.
From that point, keeper
Brianne Maluda made four key saves to hold AU off the board heading into halftime. After the break, Alvernia opened the scoring at 41:51, as Andrea Zimmerman finished a nice passing play. Strasser received a pass at the right post and fed it across to Zimmerman on the left post for the score.
King's had the game's next chance as
Kelley O'Keefe took a pass on the left wing off of a corner but her shot was stopped by Beamesderfer. That's where the game would stand until 55:28, as Morgan Mondschein tapped in a rebound off a Erica Grove shot to make the score 2-0.
At full-time, King's was awarded three penalty corners and generated four shots with the last shot forcing a whistle and a penalty stroke. Freshman
Hannah Robbins stepped up but her attempt to the right of Beamesderfer was stopped to secure the shutout.
Alvernia held a 16-7 shot edge while earning nine of the game's 15 penalty corners. Maluda finished with six saves for the Monarchs, while Runo added two defensive saves as well. Beamesderfer made six stops to earn the shutout.
King's will jump back into MAC Freedom action on Friday, October 5 at 7 p.m., hosting Eastern University in McCarthy Stadium.
