PITTSTON, PA (November 10, 2018) – The King's College men's ice hockey team were unable to rebound from Friday night's tough overtime loss as the defending Middle Atlantic Conference Champions from Stevenson University handed the Monarchs a 5-1 loss on Saturday afternoon at Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.
The visiting Mustangs (3-1-0, 2-1-0 UCHC, 1-1-0 MAC) got on the board with two goals in the first period. Carl Lyden scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year at 9:39 after Monarchs goalie
Jake Tugnutt made a save on a shot by Aaron Murray. Matt Cappucci picked up the rebound and sent the puck to Lyden for the first goal of the game. Oleg Potemkin scored what would be the game-winning goal at 16:44 for his first of the season.
The Monarchs (0-6-0, 0-4-0 UCHC, 0-2-0 MAC) took advantage of their second power play opportunity of the game at 12:15 of the second period when
Luciano Bucci ripped a laser into the back of the net for his second goal of the year and fifth of his career.
Isaac Cirinna recorded his third assist of the season and eighth of his career on the play. The Mustangs responded two minutes later with a power play goal of their own as Luke Benitez knocked in a rebound for his first goal of the season. Evan Williams increased the lead to 4-1 at 16:34 of the period with a shot that just went under the pipe and into the back of the net. Stevenson added an insurance goal in the third period.
Jake Tugnutt made 38 save in net while facing 43 shots. Bucci led the Monarchs with five shots and won 12 of his 21 faceoffs attempts.
Tyler O'Mara had a great day in the faceoff circle winning 17 while losing just seven. Overall, the Monarchs won 45 faceoffs and lost just 31.
Christian La Croix, O'Mara, and
Jamie Lukas had four shots each as the Monarchs put 28 shots on goal.
Stevenson had five different goal scorers in the game and 12 different skaters record a point. Jarrod Vroman, Christian Ripley, and Chad Watt had two assists each as the only multi-point recorders. Riley McVeigh picked up his third win of the year with 27 saves in goal.
Both teams committed five penalties in the game for 10 minutes and went one-for-four on the power play.
King's will continue their homestand next weekend with two more games at Revolution Ice against Wilkes and Bryn Athyn. The Monarchs will host the Colonels for the first time on Friday night at 7 p.m. before the Lions come to town for a non-conference Saturday night contest in Pittston.
