Gould, Mahoney Score For Monarchs Against Nazareth

ROCHESTER, NY (November 10, 2018) – Freshman Maggie Gould scored her second goal of the year and captain Gracen Mahoney added an unassisted goal for the King's College women's ice hockey team in a 9-2 loss at Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.

The Monarchs (1-5-0, 0-4-0 UCHC) ended the Golden Flyers (6-0-0, 2-0-0 UCHC) shutout streak in the second period as Kellie Munro found Gould for her second goal of the season at the 9:17 mark of the period. Nazareth has been very impressive in their first season as a varsity program and leads the nation in scoring offense and were second in scoring defense coming into the day. Before Gould's goal the Golden Flyers didn't allowed a goal since the opening minutes of their season-opening victory. Nazareth scored 48 straight goals in between the first two goals they allowed.

Gabriella DeMeo gave the Flyers an early lead with a goal 2:20 into the game. King's had three penalties called on them in the first period giving Nazareth three power play opportunities. The Monarchs were able to kill off all three as they held the Flyers to 10 shots in 5:42 of power play minutes. Cristina Darby increased the lead to 2-0 with a goal at 18:33, just eight seconds after King's returned to full strength following their third penalty. Kiva Sierra Stoltz was a big reason the Flyers were only up two goal after the first 20 minutes as the sophomore goalie made 18 saves in the period while facing 20 shots.

In the second period Nazareth won the opening faceoff and drove the puck quickly down the ice as Keeley Rose found Hailey Redders on a cross-ice pass for her sixth goal of the season 20 seconds in. The Monarchs fought hard to cut into the lead and finally found an opening when Gould knocked home her second goal of the year at 9:17 to make the score 3-1 in favor of the hosts. Nazareth responded with a goal with 1:44 left in the period to take a 4-1 lead into the second intermission.

Nazareth came out of the break and scored four goals to increase their advantage to 8-1 with 5:30 on the clock. Mahoney knocked in her own rebound at 16:23 to make King's the first team to score twice in a game against Nazareth. The goal was her first of the season and fifth of her career. The Golden Flyers added another goal with 23 seconds left to set the final score.

Stoltz finished with a season-high 47 saves while Mahoney won a team-best eight faceoffs on 15 attempts. Gould finished with four shots as Erin King and Mahoney had two each.

The Golden Flyers had eight different goal scorers and 15 different skaters record a point. Kyla Thompson led the way with two goals and one assist while Nikolle Van Stralen, Darby, Redders, and Rose had a goal and an assist each. Noelle Giroux made nine save to pick up the win in net.

King's will return to action next weekend when they travel back to New York to take on Manhattanville College in a pair of United Collegiate Hockey Conference and Middle Atlantic Conference games. The Monarchs will make their first trip to Playland Ice Casino in Rye for a Friday/Saturday series with the Valiants. Friday night's game will start at 7 p.m. while Saturday's contest is scheduled for a 3 p.m. puck drop.
