RYE, NY (November 16, 2018) – Sophomore forward
Gracen Mahoney became the second player in program history to tally a goal in consecutive games as the King's College women's ice hockey team dropped their series opener 6-1 at Manhattanville College on Friday night.
Mahoney, who scored on a breakaway, is the first Monarch (1-6-0) to score in back-to-back games since
Caitlin Redden did it last year against Nichols and Post. The sophomore scored at the 16:25 mark of the third period following two great passes by her
Kelly Tuffy and
Raeann Clancey from the defensive end..
Manhattanville (2-0-1) scored twice in the first, three times in the second, and then once in the third to stay unbeaten this year. The Valiants received a big night from Ashley DeFusco and Brayden James who score two goals each. Ali Howard had three assists and Nicole Mensi added one goal and two assists.
James gave M'Ville an early lead with her first goal of the year off an assist by Mensi at the 2:41 mark of the first period. DeFusco made it 2-0 10 minutes later. The Valiants outshot the Monarchs 17-7 in the period as
Kiva Sierra Stoltz made 15 saves in net for King's.
Kellie Munro had three of the seven shots for the Monarchs including a pair following Manhattanville's first goal. King's had a chance to cut into the lead at the end of the period following the first penalty of the game. Munro and
Maggie Gould put shots on goal that were saved by Rose Pijaca in the final minute of the period.
The Valiants opened the second period with an big offensive push taking seven shots in the first four minutes. The Monarchs blocked three of the shots and Stoltz made three saves before Zoey Pellowitz knocked in a rebound to give M'Ville a three-goal cushion. DeFusco scored her second of the game a few minutes later to increase the lead to 4-0. Mensi made it 5-0 with her second of the year with 1:59 left in the period.
James added another goal in the third period for Manhattanville's final tally of the night. The Valiants outshot the Monarchs 47-12 in the game. Neither team was able to take advantage of seven combined penalties for 14 minutes. The Monarchs were 0-3 on the power play while the hosts were 0-4. Stoltz finished with 41 saves in net. Mahoney finished the game with four shots while Munro had three.
King's and Manhattanville will close out the weekend series tomorrow afternoon with a 3 p.m. start time at the Playland Ice Casino in Rye.
