Monarch Men's Basketball Game Notes - Muhlenberg

WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 12, 2018) – The King's College men's basketball team will open their 2018-19 home slate tomorrow as they play host to Muhlenberg College tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at McGrane Gymnasium.  Both teams will look to secure their first win of the season.

Last Time Out: King's opened the season on the road at Penn State Hazleton last Thursday evening, where they dropped a 73-60 decision. The Nittany Lions went on a 23-2 run early in the second half to make the difference. JJ Glinsky made his collegiate debut for King's as he led the Monarchs with 13 points in 23 minutes off the bench. Noah Tanner and Patrick Galvin also chipped in with nine points apiece.
 
The Book on the Monarchs (0-1):
  • The Monarchs were ninth among the 416 Division III basketball teams last year with 21.0 turnovers forced per game and a 6.8 turnover margin.
  • The Monarchs led the MAC Freedom last year with 10.8 steals per game, thanks in part to two of the top three stealers in the conference, both of whom return for King's this season. Josh Bailey had 2.04 steals per game last year, second in the MAC Freedom, while Noah Tanner was third with 1.92 steals per game.
  • King's had four wins last year when they were either tied or trailing at halftime.
  • King's scored exactly 2,000 points last year, and their average of 80.0 points per game led the MAC Freedom last year.
  • The Monarchs also led the MAC Freedom in free throw percentage last year, making 76.5 percent of free throws, or 20th in Division III basketball.
  • Tyler Millan led all returning scorers with 9.8 points per game last season. He scored at least 10 points in each of his last seven games last season, in which he shot 59.3 percent from the field and 59.0 percent from the three-point line in that stretch.
  • Sophomore Noah Tanner was second among returning players last year with 9.3 points per game. He posted three 20-point games, including a season-high 21 points off the bench on Nov. 20, 2017 against Clarks Summit.
  • Jake Pawliczak led all Monarch defenders with seven rebounds in their loss against Penn State Hazleton on Thursday.
 
The Book on the Mules (0-1):
  • Muhlenberg finished sixth of 10 teams in Centennial Conference play last year. They sported a 9-9 conference record, and were 11-14 overall.
  • The Mules were tabbed to finish sixth of 10 teams in the Centennial Conference preseason poll for the 2018-19 season.
  • The Mules led the Centennial with 9.2 three-pointers made per game and a 72.4 free-throw percentage.
  • The Mules were second in the conference with 13.1 giveaways per game and a 1.09 assist-to-turnover ratio.
  • Matt Gnias was named an honorable mention last year as a guard. In 25 games last season, he averaged 13.6 points per game, and was seventh in the Centennial with 96 assists and ninth with 36 steals; both figures led the Mules.
  • Gnias' finest performance last year came against Franklin & Marshall, scoring 25 points in an 82-80 upset win. Franklin & Marshall reached the Sweet Sixteen last year.
  • Sophomore Michael Morreale tied a personal best with 16 points in the Mules' loss to Skidmore on Saturday. He averaged 8.4 points per game last season.
  • Dallas Hoffman scored 16 points in his collegiate debut on Saturday, in a tough loss to Skidmore. His 16 points are the most by a Muhlenburg freshman in his debut since 2011.
  • Freshman Dan Gaines also chipped in, scoring 15 points in his collegiate debut, while fellow classmate Nate Henty Brown scored nine points and eight rebounds.
 
Matchup History: King's has a 5-8 overall record against Muhlenberg. The first game between the two schools occurred in the 1965-66 season, where King's won 88-73. King's has won three of the last five games.
 
Last Meeting: In an exciting contest between the two squads last season on Nov. 28, 2017, Chris Fazzini scored all twelve of his points in the second half, in which he scored the Monarchs' last 10 points, capped by a good layup with two seconds remaining in regulation to give King's a 74-72 come-from-behind victory. The Monarchs had trailed for most of the second half.
 
Up Next: The Monarchs will travel to Susquehanna University this weekend to participate in the Susquehanna Trailways Tip-off Tournament. They will play host Susquehanna University at 8 p.m. on Friday. They will then play either Oneonta or Grove City on Saturday depending on the results. If King's defeats Susuqehanna, they will play at 3 p.m. on Saturday. If not, they'll play at 1 p.m.
