GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA (November 13, 2018) -- The King's College women's basketball team shot 50.0 percent from the field on Tuesday evening, while three players poured in 20 or more points to aid in a 86-81 road win over Gwynedd Mercy University in non-conference play from the Griffin Complex.
Both teams were hot out of the gate, as the hosting Griffins jumped out to an 18-15 lead after the first quarter of action. The Monarchs (1-0) would respond with a huge 29-point second quarter, making 10-of-17 from the floor and connecting on 8-of-11 from the charity stripe to take a 44-41 lead into the intermission break. King's used a 9-0 run through the middle of the period to take the lead, going 4-for-4 over the stretch with Mackenzie York scoring five of the points. KC was also aided by three GMU turnovers during the spurt.
After the break, King's would lead until the 3:15 mark of the period when Gwynedd Mercy's Chyanne Fine poured in a layup to make the score 56-55. On the next possession,
Alexis Steeber drilled a three-pointer to push the Monarchs back on top by two. King's would finish the quarter with seven of the last eight points to head into the final period up five at 62-57. The Monarchs pushed their lead out to as much as eight on a layup in transition from
Rebecca Prociak off an assist from
Lindsey Dippre.
The hosts didn't go away, pulling to within two at 5:26 of the quarter after a three from Olivia Roseman, but minutes later
Kayla Dillinger hit a huge triple with 3:49 left in the game to put King's back up four. With the score 77-76 in favor of King's following a Griffin layup, King's used a 6-0 run to push ahead for good, icing the game from the line with five free throw makes.
Yori finished the contest with a game and team-best 26 points, connecting on 10-of-17 from the floor including three of her five shots from behind the arc. The junior guard also dished out four assists and grabbed four steals in the win. Steeber finished with 21 points as well, going 7-of-16 on her field goal attempts while leading the team in rebounds with five. Prociak was efficient in her time on the floor, scoring 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting over 29 minutes of action.
Dippre added 11 points and tied for the team lead with four assists, and Dillinger posted six points, three rebounds and outstanding defense as usual over 28 minutes. King's was an even 30-for-60 from the field Tuesday evening, going 20-of-25 (80.0 percent) from the line. King's took advantage of GMU's mistakes, scoring 30 points off of the Griffin's 24 turnovers. With all the makes Tuesday, there weren't a ton of rebounds to go around, but GMU did edge the Monarchs on the boards, 32-29.
Roseman paced the Griffins (0-1) with 20 points, seven assists and five rebounds, and Susan Bossler chalked up 18 points and five assists as well in the loss.
King's will now focus on the Cross County Challenge this weekend, traveling to Marywood University to play the University of Scranton Friday evening at 6 p.m. for a battle with the No. 8 ranked Royals in Insalaco Arena.
