Monarch Wrestling Match Notes - Southeast Region Duals

WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 14, 2018) — Next up for the Monarchs are the Southeast Region Duals where they will head to Salem, VA this Saturday, November 17 at Ferrum College. King's College will face Bluefield College first followed by Southern Virginia University. They will wrap up the duals battling the host Ferrum.

Last Time Out: King's competed in the Roger Williams Invitational where 11 other teams came from outside the Middle Atlantic Conference to compete. King's finished 12th out of 12 teams but was able to put up some exceptional victories. Dakota Quick was also able to make another semi-final appearance for the Monarchs and grab a sixth-place finish. Matt Sparks went 4-2 in the tournament at one point going on a three-match win streak.
 
The Book on the Monarchs:
  • Sparks went 4-2 again for a second straight weekend in the 149-pound weight class at Roger Williams.
  • Sparks has recorded 19 takedowns and 18 escapes so far this season.
  • Quick was able to place sixth at 125 pounds in the Roger Williams invitational and third at the Ned McGinley Invitational.
  • Quick has accumulated 22.5 points out of the team's total 38 points so far this season.
  • Rene Sousa got his first win of the season by pin fall against Conor Maier of USMMA.
 
The Book on the Rams:
  • Bluefield hosted their first ever home match versus West Virginia University Institute of Technology.
  • The Rams fell 31-24 against WVUT.
  • The four wins recorded by Bluefield were all pins by Will Anders, Noah Reynolds, Luke Young and Matthew Bourne.
  • Young and Reynolds were both able to place third at the King Open going 3-1.
  • Out of the 12 wrestlers competing at the King Open, five recorded at least one victory.
 
The Book on the Knights:
  • Matt Speelman and Alex Brunner were both able to finish in second place in their respective weight class at the Averett Cougar Open.
  • The 133 pounder Aaron Freidhof was able to come away with sixth place in their last tournament after losing by major decision in his match for fifth/sixth place.
  • Quigley Whitaker placed sixth after facing teammate Speelman and dropping.
  • Matthew Rohrdanz managed a fourth-place finish.

The Book on the Panthers:
  • Collin Saunders went 4-0 in the 149-pound weight class with two pins and two technical falls which lead him to take the number one spot.
  • Jalen White came in second place at the 125-pound weight class with a record of 2-1 in his first collegiate tournament.
  • Mario Vasquez was able to place second in the 141-pound weight class with a record of 3-1.
  • The 157 pounder Austin Smith was able to place second with a 2-1 record for the day.
 
Up Next: The Monarchs will get back on the road and head to Messiah College in Grantham, PA for the Messiah Petrofes Invitational Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1.
