SELINSGROVE, PA (November 17, 2018) -- Sophomore guard
Noah Tanner scored a career-high 22 points Saturday in the consolation game of the Susquehanna Trailways Tip-Off Tournament, but it wasn't enough as Grove City College earned the 84-76 win in action from O.W. Houts Gymnasium.
Tanner, who was named as All-Tournament Team for his play over the last two days, eclipsed his previous career-best of 21 points set last season vs. Clarks Summit on November 20, 2017. The Throop, PA native got to his personal best on 6-of-14 shooting, making 3-of-7 from deep along with seven of his nine free throw attempts.
The Wolverines led for much of the first half, taking a 31-23 lead at 9:35 of the opening period after a layup by Justice Rice. The Monarchs (0-4) responded with a 10-0 run, capped by a triple from
JJ Glinsky to take a 33-31 lead. Senior
James Willis buried two three-pointers during the span for King's.
The two squads would exchange the lead multiple times over the last eight minutes of the half, as the game entered halftime deadlocked at 42. Glinsky posted 15 points in the opening period, making 5-of-6 from three-point land. James Wells of GCC also had 15 in the opening stanza.
After the intermission, Grove City scored the first seven points of the second period before Tanner answered off a lay-up following a steal by junior
Josh Bailey. King's would stay close and tied the game at 56-56 after a triple from Bailey with 13:16 to play in regulation.
After King's tied the contest back up at 59-59, the Wolverines rattled off seven straight points and led by as much as nine at 70-61 with 4:05 to play. The Monarchs twice pulled to within two, with the last time coming with 1:02 to play in regulation after a pair of free throws but six straight makes by Rice at the line sealed the win for GCC (1-2).
Glinsky finished with 17 points overall following his hot first half, while
Joe Lonardi posted 10 points. Freshman
Jake Pawliczak added seven points and team-high nine rebounds, and Bailey finished with seven points and four assists. Freshman
Patrick Galvin came off the bench to score seven points along with three assists.
Wells finished with a game-high 35 points on 15-of-22 shooting, while Rice chalked up a double-double of 16 points and 11 boards while missing a triple-double by two assists with eight total. King's made a season-high 12 three-point makes on the contest, winning the turnover battle, 19-10.
King's will turn around and host Clarks Summit University Monday evening at 7 p.m. in McGrane Gymnasium.
