LA PLUME, PA (November 20, 2018) -- Senior forward
Alexis Steeber tied her season-best with 21 points Tuesday evening, helping the King's College women's basketball team to an 87-71 win over Keystone College in non-conference action from Ace Spaulding Gym.
The two teams traded the leads early in the opening period, but the hosting Giants went on a 9-0 run capped by layup by Maddy Moro. With Keystone leading 21-12 with 1:51 to play in the first quarter, King's scored the final five points on a three-pointer by Samantha Razja and jumper by
Mackenzie Yori to make the score 21-17 at the end of the first.
The hosts would continue to hold the lead until
Lindsey Dippre hit a layup off a pass from Rajza to tie the game at 25. After Keystone regained the lead for a few minutes, junior
Kayla Dillinger canned a three-pointer to push King's ahead at 30-29. The triple was part of a 9-0 run for the Monarchs that finished with King's ahead 34-29 after two free throws by Rajza.
King's held onto the lead for the rest of the half, as Rajza made a layup just before the buzzer to give the Monarchs a 45-39 lead at the break. The Monarchs kept their momentum going after the intermission, going on a 7-1 run to make the score 52-40 with 8:19 to play in the third quarter.
The lead hovered around 10 for much of the third quarter until 2:57 left when Yori hit a jumper to give King's a 15-point lead, its biggest up until tht point. The Monarchs would increase their lead to 17 points at one point, as Steeber posted her 19th point of the night with 26 seconds to go in the third.
After Keystone cut its deficit to 13 points going to the fourth quarter, the Monarchs would go on another run midway through the fourth to pull away. King's led by as 23 points before settling for the 16-point victory.
Steeber posted her 21 points on 10-of-17 shooting, adding four rebounds as well. Junior
Rebecca Prociak chalked up 19 points, six rebounds and four assists on 7-of-15 from the floor, while Yori knocked down seven of her 15 shot attempts for 15 points. Dippre added 10 points, five boards and four helpers, and Rajza also posted nine points, five rebounds and two assists.
Dillinger posted six points, six rebounds and three assists, and freshman
Emily Kriston chalked up five points and four assists. King's posted 21 assists to just 12 turnovers, as it shot 45.5 percent (35-77) overall. Freshman
Erika Freely also scored her first career bucket Tuesday.
Bre Moore scored a game-high 23 points, while Moro finished with 22 points for the Giants. Keystone shot 43.1 percent from the floor, but committed 20 turnovers while shooting just 2-from-14 from behind the arc.
King's (2-2) is off until Saturday afternoon, hosting Neumann University at 3 p.m. in the home opener in McGrane Gymnasium November 24.
