HARRISVILLE, RI (November 23, 2018) –
Gracen Mahoney took advantage of two Bison women's ice hockey skaters in the penalty book to score her third goal of the year in a 7-1 loss to host Nichols College on Friday night in Rhode Island.
King's (1-8-0) struggled earning any offense all night as the Bison (6-2-1) outshot them 62-7. Nichols scored three times in the opening period as Kelly Ferreira, Katelyn Joyal, and Mel AcAleer combined for eight of the nine points the Bison scored in the period. Ferreira opened the scoring 2:59 into the game when she knocked in a cross-ice pass from the left side for her seventh of the year.
Joyal made it 2-0 at 10:57 when she found the back of the net following a pass by Ferreira from behind net to left side. Joyal scored again at 14:53 to give the Bison a three-goal advantage. King's had a great opportunity to cut into the lead on the next possession as
Mary Deyell found herself on a breakaway with just the goalie to beat. However, her shot from left side was saved by Abby Bassett.
The Monarchs came out of the locker room and played strong in the second period holding the Bison without a goal. Offensively,
Maggie Gould had a chance to score in the period when she stole the puck near the NC blue line for a breakaway attempt. Bassett was able to make another great save to keep the Monarchs off the board. Mahoney also had a breakaway attempt a few minutes later as she fought off a defender while taking her shot that Bassett denied. Following a interference penalty at 16:28 and a checking penalty at 17:38 the Monarchs found themselves with a two-woman advantage.
KC nearly got caught off-guard as Kirsten Sullivan scooped up a loose puck and sped down the ice for a breakaway shot that sailed wide left.
Erin King picked up the puck for the Monarchs and sent it up to
Kellie Munro. Munro found Mahoney on the right side to cut the lead to 3-1. The Bison responded with four goals, including three power play goals, in the third period to set the final score.
Mahoney finished the game with four of King's seven shots. She was also 10-17 on faceoffs. Munro recorded her fourth assist of the year and won 10 of the 20 faceoffs she took.
Kiva Sierra Stoltz made a season-high 55 saves in net.
McAleer led the Bison with five assists while Joyal scored two goals and added an assist. McKenna Gernander scored two power play goals while Ferreira had a goal and an assist. Bassett made six saves to pick up the win in goal.
The teams will conclude the weekend series tomorrow at 3:40 p.m. back at Levy Rink in Harrisville.
