HARRISVILLE, RI (November 24, 2018) – Sophomore goalie
Emma Zeveney returned from injury to make 38 saves and the King's College women's ice hockey team had one of their better defensive performances of the season in a 3-0 loss at Nichols College on Saturday afternoon at Levy Rink.
Despite the loss, the Monarchs recorded their second-most shots of the season with 23 and held the Bison to 41 shots which is the least amount of shots the team has allowed in a game since conceding 41 and 35 in a sweep by Utica on the second weekend.
King's held the host without a goal in the first period as Zeveney made 15 saves. The Monarchs countered an early onslaught of shots by the Bison with three straight shots on goal by
Gracen Mahoney,
Josée Aitken, and
Erin King. NC's Stephanie Runciman denied all three attempts to keep the game scoreless. The Monarchs nearly took the lead late in the period as
Morgan Almon hit the pipe, Aitken,
Meghan Mietlicki, and Mahoney closed out the period with a trio of shots of goal that Runciman saved.
KC continued the strong play in the second period as Runciman was forced to make two more saves on shots by Mahoney and
Tessa Schaefer-Flynn in the opening minutes. The Bison responded with the first goal of the game midway through the period. Abby Lueken found the back of the net for the second time this season to give the hosts a 1-0 lead with 10:07 left in the period. Katelyn Joyal had the assist, her third of the season. The Monarchs fought vigorously to even the score but were unable to get anything past Runciman who made 12 saves in the period.
Nichols added two more insurance goals in the third period to set the final score. Nicole Cowan scored her first of the year at 12:50 before McKenna Gernander recorded her fourth goal of the year with 15 second left in the game and the Bison on the power play. The Monarchs struggled with penalties in the period committing five of their six total for 10 minutes.
Mahoney led King's winning 18 of 26 faceoff attempts and putting seven shots on goal. Mietlicki and
Maggie Gould took three shots each while
Kellie Munro won nine of 13 faceoffs. The Monarchs won 30 of 46 faceoffs as a team.
Gernander and Cowan led the Bison with one goal and an assist each. Runciman finished with 23 saves to pick up the win in goal.
King's will return to the ice next weekend with a pair of games against UCHC/MAC foe Stevenson University. The Monarchs will host the Mustangs on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Pittston for the team's Hockey Fights Cancer game at Revolution Ice Centre. The teams will then wrap up the series at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
