Two Late Goals Give Castleton 3-1 Victory Over King’s

RUTLAND, VT (November 23, 2018) – Glenn Wiswell scored twice in the final six minutes to give the Castleton University men's hockey ice team a 3-1 victory over King's College on Friday night in Rutland. The host Spartans advanced to Saturday's WSYB/Catamount Radio Invitational Championship game with the victory while the Monarchs will play in the consolation game.

The Monarchs (0-9-0) received another great performance in net by freshman Brandon Daigle who stopped 43 of the 46 shots he faced. Castleton (1-5-3) took the early lead in the first period when Jason Bilski scored unassisted after a steal for his second goal of the season at the 8:18 mark. King's fought back for the game-tying goal but shots by Michael DiSchiavi, Tommy Green, and Isaac Cirinna were denied by Spartan goalie Luke Cohen.

In the second period KC went on their only power play of the game 1:36 into the period following a slashing penalty. Christian La Croix nearly tied it up on King's first shot of the opportunity, but Cohen was able to knock the puck away. The Monarchs had another great look at the net before the penalty expired as Jamie Lukas put a shot on goal that once again Cohen was able to keep out of the back of the net. The Monarchs were able to even the game up with 1:09 left in the period as DiSchiavi forced turnover and sent a pass up to Lukas who beat Cohen for his fourth goal of the year.

The Spartans began the third period on the power play which the Monarchs successfully killed off with just one shot on goal allowed. The teams battled back and forth with both goalies making big save after big save to keep the game even. Wiswell scored the go-ahead goal with 5:55 remaining on a shot from the right side. Wiswell then put the game away with another goal with 2:40 left on a rebounded shot by Nick Gravina.

Lukas finished with four shots while Nicholas Palumbo and Cameron Anklewich took three shots each. DiSchiavi recorded his third assist of the year. Nicholas Gullo led the Monarchs on faceoffs winning 14 of his 20 attempts as King's won the faceoff battle 37-35.

The Spartans outshot the Monarchs 46-23 and were led by Wiswell with nine. Gravina put six shots on goal and finished the game with two assists. Cohen made 22 saves for his first victory of the year.

King's will be back at Spartan Arena on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the consolation game against Anna Maria College. The Amcats lost to Brockport 5-1 in the earlier game.
