King's Women's Hockey Raises Awareness On Hockey Fights Cancer Night

PITTSTON, PA (November 30, 2018) -- Friday evening at Revolution Ice Centre saw the King's College women's hockey team take part in the National Hockey League's Hockey Fights Cancer initiative, as they wore pink jerseys and honored those that have suffered through the hardships that the disease causes.

Prior to the game, King's sophomore captain Gracen Mahoney saw her mother Victoria drop the opening puck. Victoria Mahoney is cancer-free after being diagnosed with mixed phenotype leukemia and has successfully surpassed day 111 post stem cell transplant. She then accepted a King's College jersey from her daughter just before the opening face-off.

As for the game, the Monarchs played inspired all night but two goals in the third period helped Stevenson University pull away for a 4-0 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) game.

Early on in the contest, King's was buzzing and had the best scoring chance of the opening 10 minutes when sophomore Caitlin Redden's backhand attempt was fended off by Annie Smyth-Hammond with a shoulder save. King's kept the pressure on and saw great attempts by Maggie Gould and Josee Aitken narrowly miss.

With 3:43 to play in the opening period, the Mustangs earned a power play and broke the scoring as Kellen Wittman posted an extra-man goal with help from Allyson Barlow and Cierra Siemasko. King's played well in the second period as well, with a stretch in the middle point of the frame seeing Gould just missing tying the game on a wrist shot.

Minutes later, freshman defenseman Erin King collected the puck in her own zone and went up the ice in a flash, going backhand to forehand after a long rush but her shot was deflected away. Right after that, Stevenson went back on the power play and capitalized as Carly McGee tallied to make the score 2-0.

Two third-period goals by the Mustangs would push them out of reach for King's, but the Monarchs still battled hard and ended up posting the second-most shots on the season with 27 and most since the season-opening 3-1 win over Wilkes University.

Sophomore Emma Zeveney was stellar in cage for the Monarchs (1-10-0, 0-7-0 UCHC), making some incredible saves including a full split pad save in the second period.  On the night, Zeveney finished with 43 stops, making 14 stops in the first frame and 16 in the second stanza. Aitken posted a season-high six shots for the Monarchs, and King totaled five shots as well. Mahoney won 15-of-24 faceoffs, adding two shots as well.

Wittman finished with two goals to pace the Mustangs (2-6-1, 1-5-1 UCHC), and Siemasko also dished out two assists on the night.

These two teams will be back on the ice tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.. finishing the two-game series at Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston, PA.
