Second Quarter Run Fuels Women’s Basketball To Fourth Straight Win

DOVER, DE (November 29, 2018) – Rebecca Prociak scored a career-high 29 points and the King's College women's basketball team outscored host Wesley College 31-11 in the second quarter to extend their winning streak to four games with a 91-69 victory over the Wolverines on Wednesday night at the Jim and Shirley Wentworth Gymnasium in Dover.

The Monarchs (5-2) jumped out to a 5-3 lead on a bucket by Alexis Steeber and a three-pointer by Samantha Rajza in her first collegiate start. Wesley (1-4) knocked down four three on their next four trips down the floor to take a 12-5 lead. Mackenzie Yori stopped the run with a trey to bring the Monarchs within four. Rajza made two free throws with a little over two minutes left in the quarter to bring KC within two at 17-15. The Wolverines responded with a 9-4 run to close out the quarter including a Angelique Gathers three-pointer right before the buzzer to take a 26-19 lead.

King's came out strong in the second quarter as Prociak scored four of her points to bring the Monarchs within two points with 7:34 on the clock. The junior grabbed a rebound on the other end and brought the ball up court finding Yori open for a three to give the Monarchs the lead. Following a bucket by Wesley to retake the lead Prociak knocked down four free throws to give King's a 34-31 with five minutes left. KC outscored Wesley 16-6 in the final five minutes to take a 50-37 halftime lead. Prociak had 12 points in the quarter while Yori added 11 to pace the Monarch offense.

Three-pointers by Rajza and Yori increased the lead to 15 points in the opening minutes of the third quarter. The Wolverines scored five straight points before Steeber and Prociak scored three points each to bring the lead up to 62-46 with 5:20 remaining. Prociak increased the lead to 20 points with back-0-back layups. Yori ended the quarter with a three-pointer off a nice pass from Sara Wolbert to give King's a 76-52 lead.

King's built their largest lead of the game in the fourth quarter after a Yori driving layup with 6:45 left gave King's a 32-point advantage at 87-55. The Wolverines outscored the Monarchs 14-4 the rest of the way to set the final score.

The 91 points were the most for the Monarchs since a 95-46 victory over Penn State Schuylkill in 2012. King's finished the game shooting 31-for-70 (44.3%) from the field including 11-for-31 (35.5%) from beyond-the-arc. The Monarchs shot a season-best 85.7 percent from the free throw line knocking down 18 of their 21 attempts.

Rebecca Prociak was 9-for-13 from the field and 11-for 12 at the line for a career-high 29 points. The juniors recorded her fourth double-double of the year and was just shy of a triple-double with 15 rebounds and eight assists. Mackenzie Yori knocked down a season-high six threes to record 22 points to go with five assists and three steals. Samantha Rajza made the most of her first career start scoring a season-high 16 points while Alexis Steeber was the fourth Monarch in double digits with 12 points. The Monarchs turned 18 WC turnovers into 23 points.

Shelby Johnson led the Wolverines with 18 points and 19 rebounds. Angelique Gathers added 14 points and nine rebounds while knocking down a trio of three-pointers. Wesley shot 34.6% (27-78) from the field and had a 50-46 rebounding advantage.

King's will be now open Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play next Wednesday when they host Eastern University at 8 p.m. in McGrane Gymnasium.
