Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Utica Tops Women's Hockey Sunday

PITTSTON, PA (November 4, 2018) -- The visiting Pioneers (4-0-0, 2-0-0 United Collegiate Hockey Conference) scored twice in each period Sunday, earning a 6-0 win over the hosting King's College women's hockey team in UCHC action from Revolution Ice Centre.

The visitors jumped out in front early in the contest, as Ricki Haab scored from Taylor Dion and Kyra Borsoi to make the score 1-0. After the Monarchs killed a pair of penalties, Utica doubled its advantage on a Rebecca Brown goal. Minutes later, the Monarchs had their best chance of the opening period as Caitlin Redden had a chance from just inside the circle but Gabrielle Igo was able to make the save for the Pioneers. The rebound on the play would bounce to Tessa Schaefer-Flynn, and her shot whizzed just wide.

The second period saw some fight back from the Monarchs (1-3-0, 0-2-0 UCHC), despite two early goals by the Pioneers in the opening 7:03 of play. King's saw Erin King hit the pope at 7:13 of the period, and in fact there was a four minute stretch just before intermission that saw King's outshoot the Pioneers 7-2. The third period would go like the second, with UC scoring twice but having to shake off a feisty King's team that had a bevy of scoring chances. Freshman blue liner Meghan Mietlicki had two good chances in the period, while Kellie Munro also nearly scored but was robbed by Igo early in the stanza.

The penalty kill was once again spectacular for the Monarchs, killing off all four penalties they took as King's improved its penalty kill to 22-for-24 on the season (91.7 percent). Morgan Almon was a shot blocking machine for King's, getting in the way of five shots, the most of any skater Sunday, while King and Redden each had two blocks as well. Munro led the way with seven total shots, six going on net for King's, while Josée Aitken and King each had five attempts and three on target. Sophomore captain Gracen Mahoney, who continues to leave everything on the ice every game, was 16-for-28 on face-offs Sunday while adding four total shot attempts.

The Monarchs also saw sophomores Kelly Tuffy and Raeann Clancey block shots on the day, as King's held a slight 35-19 disadvantage in shots on goal. The Monarchs won the face-off battle 34-31, and blocked 12 shots to the only from from the Pioneers. Emma Zeveney made 23 saves on the day, while Kiva Sierra Stoltz came into the game in the third period and stopped all six shots she saw.

Haab had two goals for the Pioneers, while Brown, Maddie Paydos, Nicole Johnson, and Georgiana Santullo all tallied in the win for UC.

King's will now head out on the road for six road games, traveling to Rochester, NY next weekend for a pair of games with Nazareth College at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex in UCHC play November 9-10.
