King’s Women’s Ice Hockey Drops Conference Contest To Stevenson

PITTSTON, PA (December 1, 2018) – The King's College women's ice hockey team played inspired hockey for the second straight game but were unable to find the back of the net in a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon at Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.

The Monarchs, who wore their pink jerseys that they donned during Friday night's Hockey Fights Cancer night, were unable to overcome a slow start against the visiting Mustangs in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) contest.

Stevenson got on the board 3:31 into the game when Jordan Pirrello scored her third goal of the year off an assist by Rachel Grewette. Grewette forced a turnover inside the blue line and sent cross ice pass to Pirrello for the game's first goal. A few minutes later the Mustangs found the back of the net again off a turnover in their offensive zone as Nikki Kendrick tallied her seventh goal of the year off an assist by Allyson Barlow. Kellen Wittman increased the lead to 3-0 at 12:15 when she took advantage of King's first penalty of the game with a power play goal. Her ninth goal came off an assist by Casey Storck.

Kendrick scored her second of the game just 21 seconds into the second period as the Mustangs took advantage of another Monarch penalty. Storck had her second assist of the game on the play. SU made it 5-0 at 11:42 of the period when Maddy Ricci stole the puck and scored unassisted for her second tally of the season.

The Mustangs started the third period on the power play and took full advantage of the extra skater with Wittman's second goal of the game. Kendrick and Pirrello recorded the assist on the play. Trinity Bacless wrapped up the scoring at 10:48 when she found the back of the net off a pass from Ally Gibson.

Maggie Gould led the Monarchs (1-11-0, 0-8-0 UCHC, 0-4-0 MAC) with four shots on goal while Caitlin Redden took three. King's won the faceoff battle 29-19 as Gracen Mahoney won a team-high 10 attempts while Kellie Munro had the best percentage winning seven of eight attempts. Kiva Sierra Stoltz allowed three goals and made three saves in net before being relieved by Emma Zeveney. Zeveney made 36 saves in nearly 48 minutes of action and allowed four goals.

Kendrick led the Mustangs (3-6-1, 2-5-1 UCHC, 2-2-0 MAC) with two goals and one assist on nine shots while Wittman scored twice and took nine shots. Pirrello added one goal and one assist. Annie Smyth-Hammond made 16 saves in net to record her second victory of the year. The Mustangs held a 46-16 shot advantage and were 3-for-8 on the power play.
King's will close out the first semester with a road game at SUNY Cortland next Saturday at 2 p.m. from Alumni Arena in Cortland, NY.
