Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Monarch Men’s Ice Hockey Falls In Overtime To Nazareth

PITTSTON, PA (December 7, 2018) – The King's College ice hockey team played one of their best games of the year against United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) co-leader Nazareth College on Friday evening at Revolution Ice Centre as the visiting Golden Flyers rallied to defeat the Monarchs 2-1 in overtime.

The Monarchs (1-12-0, 1-7-0 UCHC) came out strong on home ice as they kept the high-scoring Flyers without a shot on goal for the first 11:27 of the game. On the other end of the ice Cameron Anklewich, Jamie Lukas, Orion Linnehan, and Luke Damiano all had shots saved by Nazareth netminder Sean Kuhn. Christian La Croix gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead at 15:15 when picked up a loose puck off a Brandon Daigle save, raced down the left side of the ice, held onto the puck going through a few Golden Flyers defenders as he crossed from the left side of the ice to the right, and then rocketed a backhanded shot pass Kuhn for his fifth goal of the season.

Brandon Daigle was excellent in goal for the Monarchs as he stopped all seven shots that he faced in the first period and all 13 that reached him in the second. The Monarchs did a great job all night in limiting the amount of opportunities the Golden Flyers had with a smothering defensive effort. They were 16.7 seconds away from pulling the upset on the conference co-leaders before Zander Pryor knocked in a loose puck amongst a crowd in front of the net to even the score. NC had pulled their goalie for an extra attacker in the last minute as the Monarchs tried to hold off a furious attack by the visitors.

King's had played the majority of the first half of the period a man down as three early penalties and a late second period penalty equaled 7:33 of power play time for the Golden Flyers in the first 11:25 of the period. The Monarchs were able to hold the nation's 22nd-best power play team without a goal on five total chances in the game.

In the five-minute extra session, King's came out swinging as Jack O'Neil had his wrist shot saved by Kuhn less than a minute in. Linnehan and Zack Goodman had their attempts blocked before Luciano Bucci put two shots wide of net. Nazareth was able to score the game-winning goal with 1:18 left when the Golden Flyers put pressure on the Monarchs as they tried to clear the puck out of their defensive zone. Brian Miller picked up a loose puck inside the blue line and fed a pass to Brad Pizzey who scored his second goal of the season.

Daigle finished the game with 36 saves in goal for the Monarchs. Lukas put a team-high six shots on goal while five different skaters had two shots each.

The Monarchs will look to rebound from the tough loss tomorrow afternoon when they host another UCHC co-leader in Utica College at 4 p.m. in Pittston.
