Field Hockey Posts 2-0 Shutout Over Immaculata

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 15, 2018) – The King's College field hockey team scored a goal in each half to post a 2-0 victory over Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.

King's (3-3) put early pressure on the Mighty Macs (1-6) earning two penalty corners in the eighth and ninth minutes of play. Kelley O'Keefe received a pass back after sending out the second corner from the right side and took three consecutive shots that Immaculata keeper Randie Kuhar was able to get out of the cage. Immaculata responded with two shots on goal in the 17th minute that Brianne Maluda saved. The first shot occurred following a IU corner in which Michelle Dubyk sent in a shot from the right side that Maluda was able to step in front of. Dubyk picked up the rebound and then sent a shot wide right of the cage.

The Monarchs had a great opportunity to score early in the 21st minute when Kelsey Gabriele found open space for a breakaway with just the goalkeeper to beat. Her shot beat the keeper but also sailed left of the cage as the match remained scoreless. That changed a few minutes later at 25:56 when Hannah Robbins sent a pass up the right side through a couple defenders and caught Jolee Trelar in stride on the right side of the circle. Treslar fired the ball inside the left post for her team-leading third goal of the year. The assist was Robbins' second of the season.

Immaculata had an opportunity to even the score up right before halftime following a corner but Maluda was able to make a save on a shot from Willa Thompson to keep the Monarchs up by one.

Gabriele gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead in the 44th minute on her third goal of the year. She knocked in a ball in front of cage that Trelar crossed from the right side for her second assist of the year. Gabriele looked to increase the Monarch lead with back-to-back shots that were saved a minute later. Connie Mangino followed that up with a shot that went just wide of the cage off a penalty corner.

Both teams would have opportunities to score throughout the rest of the half but neither team was able to find the back of the cage. King's had the best chance in the 66th minute when Treslar dribbled into the circle alluding a couple of defenders but her shot sailed left of the cage.

Treslar finished with one goal and one assist to lead the Monarchs. Gabriele scored a goal and Robbins added an assist. Maluda picked up her second career shutout with five saves.

King's took 12 total shots in the game and put nine of those on goal. Immaculata had seven total shots with five on goal. The Monarchs had a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.

The Monarchs will have Sunday off before returning to action on Monday night hosting Keystone College at 7 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium.
