Monarch Men’s Soccer Fall In Double Overtime To New Paltz

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 15, 2018) – The King's College men's soccer team put together another good defensive showing on Saturday night at McCarthy Stadium but SUNY New Paltz scored in the 106th minute to defeat the Monarchs 1-0 in double overtime.

New Paltz (5-2) scored the game-winner on a 30-yard bomb by Pedro Marshall that found the upper left corner of the net off an assist by Ryan Martinez with 4:53 remaining in the match. The loss ended King's (3-3-1) three match winning streak and four-match shutout streak.

The Monarchs were able to control possession early on and had their first chance of the night early in the fifth minute when Liam McLoughlin got a head on a corner kick from the left side by Aidan DeCamillo. McLoughlin's header was saved by keeper John Guzzo to keep the game scoreless. KC had another great look at goal following a foul 34 yards out in the 14th minute. Quentin Szeker-Cortes lined up the free kick and hit it well, but it sailed just over the crossbar. A minute later Zach Wolcott got in on the action with a screamer that just missed left of the goal following a failed clear after a King's corner kick.

The Hawks had their first look at goal in the 18th minute when Martinez took a free kick from just outside the box. Owen Geedey had no problem making the save. KC countered in the 33rd minute with a shot by Matthew Hesse that Guzzo was able to just knock away. Michael Scardelletti nearly gave the Monarchs a lead right before halftime but his header off a corner from Kyle Shalvey went wide left.

King's came out firing in the second half looking to score the go-ahead goal. Aidan Oyler drew a foul about 30 yards out in the 53rd minute setting up a free kick by Hesse. Once again Hesse knocked the ball pretty well towards goal, but it sailed high of the crossbar. In the 62nd minute Pat Holton fired a shot off the crossbar before DeCamillo sent the rebound wide right.

The Monarchs had a great chance to score in the 67th minute when McLoughlin found open space on a breakaway. However, Guzzo was able to stop his attempt at goal and keep the match tied. New Paltz was forced the make a change in net in the 70th minute due to injury and the Monarchs wasted no time putting substitute Marc DePasquale to work.

Fabio Massa fired a shot from distance just 14 seconds after the change. Zach Wolcott found open space on the right side a minute later and put on shot on goal. In the 75th minute KC earned three straight corner kicks but were only able to record a shot following the third attempt. Massa found open area in the box to put another shot on goal that DePaquale was able to knock away.

The Hawks caught a big break in the 85th minute when King's was called for a foul in the box. Kevin Doorley, one of Division III's top scorers this year, stepped up to take the penalty kick. Geedey kept the game scoreless with an incredible save and then made another big save on a rebounded attempt to send the game into extra time.

Neither team was able to score in the first 10 minutes of extra time although both had a few good looks at goal. As the seconds ticked away excitement at McCarthy Stadium grew for what was a thrilling match. In the second overtime period Oyler sent a header towards net following a throw in by Massa but DePasquale was able to control it. The Hawks went on the counter attack and KC was able to thwart their first attempt. However, following a turnover near midfield, the Hawks pushed the ball up to Martinez who set up Marshall for his game-ending goal.

The Monarchs held the high-powered New Paltz offense to just 10 total shots in the game while recording 19 including nine on goal. King's had a 11-1 corner kick advantage. Owen Geedey equaled his season high with five saves.

The Monarchs will look to rebound from the tough loss on Wednesday when they host Cabrini University at 7 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium.
