Late Goal By Axtman Propels Monarch Men’s Soccer To 1-0 Victory Over Cabrini

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 19, 2018) – August Axtman flicked a header into goal off a set piece by Quentin Szeker-Cortes with 6:25 left in the match to give the King's College men's soccer team a thrilling 1-0 victory over Cabrini University at McCarthy Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was déjà vu for the Monarchs and Cavaliers as King's posted their second 1-0 victory in as many years over Cabrini (2-4-1). Last year the Monarchs scored off a set piece from nearly the same area of the field with 5:41 remaining down in Radnor. King's (4-3-1) had the opportunity to score the lone goal of the match this year on the spectacular play by senior goalkeeper Owen Geedey. The captain made three big saves in the second half on shot that seemed destined for the back of the net.

The first of his big saves occurred in the 50th minute when Jared Irwin sent a shot of a cross into the box towards the upper right. Geedey was able to just get a hand on it and send it over the bar for a corner kick. His second big save came early in the 71st minute when Dani Acevedo sent a laser on goal that Geedey once again was able to knock over the cross bar for a corner kick. After the Monarchs knocked the corner attempt out of play, the Cavaliers connected on their second attempt with Derrick Amoako getting a head on the kick by Irwin. Geedey denied the header to keep the match scoreless.

The Monarchs were able to get 20 shots off including 12 in the first half while putting six of the 20 on goal. The Cavs took seven shots but put five on goal. KC had their chances to score late in the game before Axman's game-winner. Liam McLoughlin just missed high after a cross by Matthew Hesse in the 75th minute. Alastair Dinnan, last year's hero against Cabrini, nearly was the hero again this year when Fabio Massa found him open on the right side. His open shot went high of the cross bar.

In the first half Ryan Romeo, Aidan Oyler, and Axtman all had shots blocked in the first 16 minutes of play. Massa and Dinnan also had shots blocked later in the half. King's nearly scored in the final two minutes of the half when Kyle Shalvey put two shots on goal that Anthony Zampirri was able to keep out of the back of the net.

Axtman's goal was his second of the year and 10th of his career. Both of his goals this year were game-winners to increase that total to five. Szeker-Cortes recorded his second assist of the year. Geedey equaled his season high of five saves to record his fifth shutout of the season and 27th of his career.

King's will be back in action on Saturday when they travel down to Maryland for a 5 p.m. kickoff at Frostburg State University.
