Women’s Soccer Drop Heartbreaking 1-0 Match At Albright In Overtime

READING, PA (September 15, 2018) – The King's College women's soccer team took undefeated Albright College to overtime in the team's first road match of the year but a 95th minute goal by Jillian Lapidus was the difference as the host defeated the Monarchs 1-0 on Saturday night in Reading.

Lapidus moved the Lions to 5-0-1 on the season when she gathered a bouncing ball in the box and squeezed it past King's (2-3) keeper Jess Schenfeld into the lower left corner of the net for the lone goal of the match 4:32 into extra time. Albright sent the ball into the box from the left side on a free kick following a KC foul.

King's began the match strong and Emily Harrington wasted little time getting off a shot in the match as she found open pace 76 seconds in to put an attempt on goal. Lions keeper Alexis Tunney was able to keep it out of net for her first save of the evening. The Lions would get their first opportunity in the eighth minute with Autumn Bieber getting a shot on goal. Schenfeld made easy work keeping it out of the back of the net.

The Monarchs responded with shots by Breanna Jacinto, Allison Andrew, and Anna Lacalamita. Jacinto and Andrew missed high while Lacalamita hit the post before Albright knocked the ball over the goal line for a corner kick. Albright knocked the back-to-back corner attempts by Jacinto away without allowing a shot. Tunney was able to keep another shot by Harrington out of goal in the 19th minute as the Monarchs pressed to take the lead. The Lions responded a few minutes later earning a corner kick. Bieber connected with Lauren Haley for a header off the kick, but her attempt went high. Kate Griffin looked to score the only goal of the half 26 seconds before the half ended as her attempt at goal hit the post.

Albright came out strong in the second half and Haley put two shots on goal in the first six minutes of action. Schenfeld was able to knock both attempts away to keep the game scoreless. In the 64th minute the Lions earned three consecutive corner kicks, all taken by Bieber. The Monarchs defense knocked away all three attempts without a shot attempt before Bieber sent a shot wide early in the 66th minute 34 seconds following her third kick.

King's had a great look at goal in the 82nd minute on a corner kick by Jacinto. Gillian Coar, who entered the match right before the corner kick, collected the corner kick and sent a shot just high of the crossbar. Neither team was able to record another shot in regulation as the match headed into extra time. Danielle Putnam had the first opportunity to end the match in the extra period in the 94th minute. Tunney was able to make the save on the shot and sent the ball upfield setting up what would be the final play of the match.

King's took seven shots and put three on goal as Tunney made three saves for the Lions in goal. Albright took eight shots and Schenfeld made three saves for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs will return home to host Centenary University on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium.
