ANNVILLE, PA (September 22, 2018) - The King's College women's soccer team went on the road on Saturday afternoon and gave regionally-ranked Lebanon Valley all it could handle but came up just short as the host Dutchmen pulled out a 2-1 victory on a 108th minute goal.
The Monarchs (3-4) opened the match with two shots in the opening minutes.
Breanna Jacinto missed wide left followed by
Danielle Putnam putting a shot on goal 26 seconds later. Putnam's shot was kept out of the back of the net by LVC keeper Serena Donmoyer. The Dutchmen (3-2-1) recorded their first shot of the match in the 13th minute when Kira Pushart sent a shot wide left.
KC got on the board in the 26th minute when Putnam sent a cross in from the right side to
Kara Keim. Keim fired a shot from just outside the box into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Lebanon Valley fired right back not even two minutes later when Lucy McGloshen hit the crossbar and the Monarchs were called for a foul in the box on the rebound. Katie Goldsmith evened the score at one with a penalty kick goal, her third goal of the year.
In the second half the Dutchmen had headers by McGloshen and Rileigh Jo Evitts saved by
Tara Bender. LVC earned a corner kick late in the 68th minute and Emma Longenecker connected with Marissa Del Tufo for a header that went wide left of goal. The Dutchmen would have another opportunity in the 82nd minute on another corner kick but the King's defense blocked a shot by Maya Cohen to keep the score even at 1.
In the first 10 minutes of overtime the Monarchs kept the Dutchmen without a shot until the last minute when Angela Strock and McGloshen put shot on goal following a corner kick. Bender knocked both shots away to send the match into double overtime.
A couple minutes into the second overtime Putnam had a shot blocked by the LVC defense. The Dutchmen took the ball down the field and Brianna Mumma hit the post nearly ending the match. Late in the 108th minute Lea Dungan scored the game-winner for LVC on a free kick from 25 yards out into the upper right.
Lebanon Valley, who entered the match ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, out-shot King's 14-6 including 8-3 in shots on goal. The Dutchmen also had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Keim scored her second goal this week for the Monarchs while Putnam recorded her second assist of the season and fifth of her career. Putnam led King's with three shots in the match while Jacinto had two. Bender made a career-high six saves.
King's will next open MAC Freedom play next Saturday night when they host FDU-Florham at 7 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium.
