Monarch Men’s Soccer Match Notes – Centenary

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 24, 2018) – The King's College men's soccer team will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel east to Hackettstown, NJ to face Centenary University at 4 p.m. on J.E.Reeves Jr. Field.

Last Time Out: King's played Frostburg State to a 2-2 draw down in Maryland on Saturday. Sam Pipicelli and Zach Wolcott scored for the Monarchs after allowing a first half goal for the first time this year. Owen Geedey made five saves in net.
 
The Book On The Monarchs (4-3-2):
  • The King's defense has been amazing so far this season only allowing five goals in nine matches. They are ranked first in the conference and 30th in the nation with a goals against average of 0.52. The Monarch defense is also ranked 55th in the nation and best in the conference with a 0.556 shutout percentage.
  • Senior Owen Geedey has been a big reason why the defensive numbers have been so good this year as the keeper has been honored as the MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week the past two weeks. He has moved up to second in the nation with 871:42 minutes played and has five shutouts this season which is ranked ninth in the nation. He is currently the school record holder with 27 career shutouts. His .844 save percentage is the third best in the conference while his 0.52 goals against average is 35th in the nation.
  • Junior Aidan DeCamillo is tied for seventh in the MAC Freedom with two goals on the season. His leads the team with five points.
  • Junior August Axtman continues to be atop the conference rankings and is now 45th in the nation with two game-winning goals.
  • Five different Monarchs have scored one goal each. Seniors Steven Grebe and Zach Wolcott, junior Fabio Massa, and sophomores Liam McLoughlin and Sam Pipicelli have all found the back of the net this season.
  • Freshman Quentin Szeker-Cortes moved up to a tie for fourth in the conference with his third assist of the year on Saturday. Junior Ryan Romeo and McLoughlin have also recorded one assist apiece on the year.
  • King's is outshooting their opponents 154-60 this year and have put 61 shots on goal. The Monarchs defense is allowing just 6.7 shots per match. The team continues to lead the conference and are third in the nation with 8.33 corner kicks taken per match.
  • McLoughlin leads the team and is fifth in the conference with 20 shots. Massa is seventh with 19 shots.
  • The Monarchs are 6-2 all-time against the Cyclones. The teams have split the four meetings in New Jersey with the Cyclones rallying to win the most recent meeting in 2016, 2-1, after being down a goal. King's defeated Centenary 2-0 last year at McCarthy Stadium.
The Book On The Cyclones (2-5):
  • Centenary enters Wednesday's match with a 2-5 record after opening Colonial States Athletic Conference play with a 2-0 victory at Clarks Summit on Saturday. The victory over the Defenders snapped a four-match skid. The Cyclones were picked to finish second in the CSAC preseason coaches' poll this year.
  • The Cyclones are 2-2 in road matches this year including a 1-0 upset of Drew University, who was ranked 12th in the nation at the time, on the first weekend of the season.
  • First year head coach Josh Spivack, a 2009 graduate of Centenary and three-year member of the men's soccer team, brought in a class of 10 freshmen to add to the 14 upperclassmen including eight seniors on the roster. Spivack had been an assistant for the Cyclones since he graduated.
  • The Cyclones are being outscored 13-6 this season while being out-shot 119-86. CU has defended 35 corner kicks while taking 22.
  • Senior Josh Weiss leads the team with two goals on 18 shots including one game-winner. He is eighth in the CSAC with 2.57 shots per match.
  • Freshman Sebastian Montoya is tied for second in the conference with four assists.
  • Four different Cyclones have scored a goal each. Junior Matt Miller leads the group and is second of the team with 13 shots. Freshman Jahn Lopez has scored one goal on six shots while senior Sebastian Hernandez scored once on two shots. Sophomore defender Eric Nugent, a Dublin, Ireland native, scored the game-winning goal on his only shot of the year against the Defenders on Saturday.
  • Senior keeper Devon Warne leads the CSAC in minutes played with 627:19. He also leads the conference with 45 saves and is fourth with a goals against average of 1.87. He has a save percentage of .776 and has recorded two shutouts.
Up Next: King's will begin MAC Freedom play on Saturday when they host FDU-Florham at 1:30 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium.
