Monarch Women’s Volleyball Game Notes – Cairn, Clarks Summit

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 3, 2018) – The King's College women's volleyball will look to continue its strong start to the season during the middle of the week, as the Monarchs head to Cairn University Tuesday evening before hosting Clarks Summit University Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. in McGrane Gymnasium. King's is coming off a 2-0 opening weekend, knocking off Penn State Abington and Cedar Crest August 31.

Last Time Out: King's started the season with a three-set victory over Penn State Abington, rolling to the 3-0 win thanks to eight kills from senior Rachel Miller and seven terminations from freshman Grace Frati. Freshman Taylor Mueller added 14 digs in the victory. In the second match of the day, King's rallied from dropping the opening set to Cedar Crest to top the Falcons in four sets. Freshman Becca Goldberg posted a team-high 12 kills, and Mueller chalked up a match-best 19 digs.

The Book On The Monarchs (2-0):
  • The Monarchs started the season 2-0 for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, with 2016 the lone year that King's hasn't won its first two matches.
  • Senior Rachel Miller has a team-best 19 kills, while averaging 2.71 terminations per set, 11th best in the MAC Freedom through the first weekend.
  • Sophomore Rachel Galante is currently third in the MAC Freedom in hitting percentage with a .385 clip.
  • King's is first in the MAC Freedom through the opening two games, holding teams to -.018 hitting defense.
  • The Monarchs have served well this season, posting 2.86 service aces per set, the second-most behind only Delaware Valley.
  • Freshman Taylor Mueller is fourth in the MAC Freedom after posting 4.71 digs per set, leading King's with 33 total digs.
  • With her 19 kills this weekend, Miller is just 73 kills shy of 1000 for her career at King's College.
  • Head coach Bernie Kachinko is just four victories shy of 500 for his tenure at King's.
The Book On The Highlanders (1-2):
  • The Highlanders sandwiched losses against Immaculata University and College of Staten Island with a 3-0 win over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn.
  • Cairn is hitting .145 on the season, chalking up 110 kills over its first three matches.
  • Lyntia Gwess is rolling offensively, posting 4.50 kills per set, attacking at a .316 percentage over her 95 attempts.
  • Haley Sheehan has also tallied 3.40 kills per set, getting the ball a team-high 112 times.
  • Setter Liz White has dished out 87 assists, averaging 8.70 per game, also adding 22 digs.
  • Micaiah Randolph has a team-high 47 digs on the year, averaging 4.70 digs a set.
  • King's and Cairn have meet once before, as the Monarchs knocked off Cairn 3-0 last season to start the 2017 campaign.
The Book On The Defenders (1-2):
  • Clarks Summit started the season with a pair of three-set losses to Wilkes and Lycoming, knocking off Penn College in three sets.
  • The Defenders are fourth in the CSAC in hitting with a .098 hitting percentage, while ranking third in the Colonial States Athletic Conference with 8.89 kills per set.
  • Kara Brown leads the way for CSU, as she has posted 29 kills while hitting a team-best .210. Her 3.22 terminations per set is third in the CSAC.
  • Beth Muhlenkamp is second in the conference in blocks with 0.78 per set, also posting the fourth-most digs in the CSAC with 4.11 digs a game.
  • King's is 17-3 all-time against the Defenders, dating back to 1993 when Clarks Summit was named Baptist Bible. King's won the first six matches, lost three straight, and then have won the last 11 outings since 1999.
