Men’s Soccer Earns Scoreless Draw At Scranton

SCRANTON, PA (September 5, 2018) – The King's College men's soccer team put together another great defensive effort on Wednesday afternoon in a scoreless draw with host University of Scranton at Weiss Field.

The Monarchs (0-2-1) took the first shot of the game in the ninth minute when an attempt by Matthew Hesse went high. The Royals got the first shot on goal of the game when Aidan Thornell headed a ball that King's keeper Owen Geedey was able to thwart from going into the back of the net in the 19th minute. Defense was on display for both teams as neither team was able to find space to take a quality shot until the 29th minute when Aidan DeCamillo was able to get a shot off that was saved by the Scranton keeper.

King's and Scranton each had six shots in the first half while the Royals held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Geedey was forced to make two saves while Jake Hodlofski made just one in net for Scranton. Blake Hammert relived Hodlofski in net to begin the second half.

KC came out strong and earned a corner a couple minutes into the half. Ayrton Omoigui received the corner kick and was able to get a shot off, but it sailed wide. The Royals countered with a good look at net in the 62nd minute but a header by Nick Kapelewski was saved by Geedey. Liam McLoughlin had a quality look at the net for the Monarchs early in the 69th minute but his attempt was saved by Hammert. The Monarchs pushed to get across the game-winning goal in regulation with two shots in the final five minutes of the half. McLoughlin took the first shot which was saved once again by Hammert and Steven Grebe took the second which went high.

DeCamillo recorded the only shot of the first 10 minutes of overtime which went wide. The Monarchs pressured the Royals heavily in the second overtime period from the very start. Ryan Romeo looked to end the game 90 seconds in, however, his attempt was knocked away by Hammert. Fabio Massa put a shot on goal a couple minutes later but once again Hammert was there to knock the ball away and give the Monarchs a corner kick.

In the 108th minute the Monarchs had two shots at goal denied as a shot from Hesse was blocked and then six seconds later a shot from August Axtman off the rebound was saved by Hammert. The Royals were able to counter with a shot on goal from Jon Roberts with just over a minute remaining but Geedey made the save and pushed the ball quickly upfield to give the Monarchs one last shot. That shot came with 14 seconds left as Hesse rocketed off a shot towards goal. Hammert made one final save to keep the game scoreless.

KC outshot the Royals 17-9 including 11-3 after halftime. Matthew Hesse led the Monarchs with three shots while Steven Grebe, Sean Murray, and Aidan DeCamillo added two each. Owen Geedey picked up his 23rd career shutout with five saves.

The Monarchs will face another Landmark Conference opponent on Saturday when they host Juniata College at 1 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium
