Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

High-Scoring Herons Too Much For Women’s Ice Hockey

GENEVA, NY (January 12, 2019) – The King's College women's ice hockey fought hard for 60 minutes but the high scoring offense of William Smith College proved to be too much for the Monarchs in a 9-0 loss to begin a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) weekend series against the Herons at the Cooler in Geneva.

Williams Smith (11-3-0, 9-0-0 UCHC) entered the weekend with the second-highest scoring average in Division III. The Monarch (1-13-0,0-9-0 UCHC) defense held strong for the first 16:49 before the hosts tallied the only goal of the period as Julia Mings found the back of the net off a pass to the front of the crease from behind the net by Maura Mulligan. King's starting goaltender Kiva Sierra Stoltz made 17 saves before the hosts scored the first goal of the game.

Mings increased the lead five minutes into the second period with her ninth goal of the season after receiving a centering pass from Stephanie Hampton and beat a couple of defenders to the goal. Jordan Roetzer made it 3-0 with a power play goal 3:42 later when she knocked in a saved shot by Mings. Emma Zeveney made 11 saves the rest of the period to keep the deficit at three goals.

The Herons broke the game open with six goals in the final 20 minutes of play. Mings scored two more time to become the second skater in WSC program history to record a hat trick and the first to score four goals in a game.  After keeping the Herons' top point getter off the board for two periods, Abby Luth finally broke free for two goals and an assist in the final period.

King's was led by Gracen Mahoney with four shots and 12 faceoff wins in 21 attempts. Maggie Gould recorded two shots while Josée Aitken and Kellie Munro had a shot each. Stoltz and Zeveney split time in goal with Stoltz making 23 saves and Zeveney making 33 saves.

Mings led 12 different Herons who scored a point with five on four goals and an assist. Hampton had three assists while Luth tallied two goals and an assist and Jules Kennedy had one goal and two assists. Olivia Williams made eight saves in between the pipes.

The hosts scored twice on five power play opportunities while holding King's scoreless on three attempts.

The teams will be back on the ice at the Cooler tomorrow afternoon for a 4 p.m. start time to wrap up the weekend series.
