Monarch Men’s Hoops Topped at Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN, PA (January 21, 2019) – Host Delaware Valley University knocked down 13 three-pointers and made 25-of-26 from the line Monday evening, earning an 84-73 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) victory over the King's College men's basketball team in play from James Work Gymnasium in a make-up of Saturday's postponement.

Despite shooting only 38.3 percent from the floor on the evening, DelVal shot 36.1 percent from deep, converting 12-of-36 from behind the arc led by the five made triples from Mike Cianciulli. Cianciulli finished the game with a contest-best 27 points, going 8-of-19 overall while adding seven assists.

The first half was back-and-forth as the period featured eight tie scores along with 12 lead changes. The largest lead for the Monarchs (4-13, 2-4 MAC Freedom) came early on at 6-2 after a fastbreak layup from sophomore guard Noah Tanner. King's last lead of the game came at 3:39 of the opening frame, as Tyler Millan was good on a three-point attempt, making the score 25-24.

After King's tied the score back up at 28 on a three-pointer from James Willis, Delaware Valley went on an 8-2 run to end the half as the game headed into the intermission with the score 36-30 in favor of the hosts. The Monarchs outshot DelVal 47.8-28.6 in the first half, but the difference was the 15-of-16 shooting from the line for the Aggies.

King's twice got the lead down to three in the second half, both coming on field goals from freshman JJ Glinsky, but a 10-2 run by the Aggies gave Delaware Valley its largest lead to that point at 49-38 with 15:40 to go. The Monarchs got their deficit back down to six with 9:10 to play after two free throws from Noah Tanner, but another 10-1 run by the hosts made the score 72-57 with 4:34 to play. DelVal was able to ice the game from the line, going a perfect 10-for-10 from the stripe.

Junior Andrew Hudak finished with a team-best 14 points for the Monarchs, going 5-of-8 on field goals, while also leading KC with eight rebounds and five assists. Tanner added 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting before fouling out, and Glinsky also tallied 10 points for the Monarchs. Junior Josh Bailey added nine points, and freshman Jake Pawliczak finished with eight points and five caroms.

King's shot the ball well for the game, making 50 percent (26-52) from the floor on the game including shooting nearly 40 percent from behind the arc. King's held a huge 32-12 edge in points in the paint as well, but the three-point shooting from the Aggies was too much to overcome.

Along with Cianciulli, Alex Matsinye and Damian Washington each posted 14 points, with Lybrant Robinson tallying 11 points. Andre Butler added nine points and nine rebounds for the Aggies, who turned the ball over just 10 times and posted a 35-30 edge on the glass.

The Monarchs will turn around two days from now and host Misericordia University at 6 p.m. in McGrane Gymnasium to finish the first round of MAC Freedom play Wednesday evening in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
