WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 21, 2019) – The King's College women's basketball team held host Delaware Valley University scoreless over the last 8:44 of the contest, earning a 70-45 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) win in a game postponed from Saturday afternoon due to the winter weather.
The win was King's 10
th of the season, and it was the third consecutive conference win to move to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the MAC Freedom. For the first time this season though, it was the Monarch defense that spurred the win. King's held DelVal to just 28.4 shooting overall on the game, highlighted by its fourth-quarter effort that made the difference.
Carrying a nine-point lead going into the fourth quarter, King's surrendered just three points in the final 10 minutes. The Monarchs pressured the Aggies (8-9, 2-4 MAC Freedom) into 1-of-16 shooting in the final stanza, building its lead up to a game-high 25 points to pull away.
King's trailed for 3:31 of the first quarter, but with the score 13-10 in favor of the Aggies, the Monarchs went on a 9-0 run to end the opening period to take a 19-13 lead. In the second quarter, a three-pointer by
Samantha Rajza with 6:35 to go in the first half gave the Monarchs its first double-digit lead. King's held that double-figures lead through then end of the half, taking a 35-25 edge into the break.
After halftime, the Monarch lead hung around 10 points until Danielle Skedzielewski brought the Aggies to within six at 48-42 with 47 seconds to go in the third. That was as close as the Aggies would get though, scoring three more points over the contest as King's pulled away.
Junior
Rebecca Prociak posted another double-double for King's, as she finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds. The double-double was her eighth of the season, which the 23-point effort was her third straight game with 20 or more. Prociak was 6-of-11 from the floor, while tying her season-high for free throw makes with 11 out of 14 attempts.
Senior
Alexis Steeber was 6-of-10 on field goals on her way to 12 points in 31 minutes of action, and Rajza finished with 10 points as the only other double-figure scorer for King's. Junior
Mackenzie Yori posted eight points while junior
Kayla Dillinger made all three of her field goals as she registered a strong game of eight points and seven rebounds. Freshman
Emily Kriston also posted six points, four boards and three assists in 15 minutes.
King's shot 47.9 percent (23-48) from the floor on the evening, while connecting on a strong 36.8 percent (7-19) from behind the arc. King's also was very good from the free throw line, connecting on 17-of-22 from the charity stripe. The Monarchs also held a 45-32 edge on the glass, as the +13-rebounding margin was the second-best of the season.
The Monarchs held an 18-8 edge in fast break points on the evening, while edging the Aggies 30-18 on points in the paint. Domanique Moser led the Aggies with 12 points, and Skedzielewski finished with 10 points and a team-high eight caroms.
King's continues its busy week on Wednesday evening, hosting MAC Freedom leading Misericordia University (16-0, 5-0 MAC Freedom) at 8 p.m. inside McGrane Gymnasium.
