Zeveney Stops 56 Shots In Weekend Opener With Chatham

PITTSTON, PA (January 25, 2019) – Sophomore goaltender Emma Zeveney had a strong night for the King's College women's ice hockey team making 56 saves as the visiting Chatham Cougars came away with a 5-0 victory in the first of a two-game United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) series at Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston on Friday night.

The Monarchs (1-16-0, 0-12-0 UCHC) were playing their first home game in close to two months and for the first time in 2019. KC skated hard in front of their fans but were unable to get any shots past Cougar netminder Devon Strachan who made a few fantastic saves to pick up her first shutout of the season.

Chatham (6-13-0, 3-9-0 UCHC) took advantage of King's first penalty of the game with a goal 32 seconds into the power play. Danielle Bos scored her second goal of the season off assists from Jillian Rowland and Kristina Block. Rowland made it 2-0 later in the period with a rocket through a crowd in front of the net for her team-leading ninth of the year.

Sydney Collins opened up the second period with her fifth goal of the season 20 seconds in to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. The Monarchs fought hard to get back in the game as the visitors were penalized for four penalties in a span of five minutes midway through the period. KC put 10 shots on goal during their four power play opportunities during the period and had three more shots blocked. Maggie Gould and Erin King led the attack with three shots each during the stretch. Zeveney kept the Monarchs alive with 22 saves in the period.

The Monarchs held the Cougars off the board for the first 11:56 of the third period until Kerry Carr scored for her fourth of the year off a nice pass from Rowland. Madison Black rounded out the scoring with a late power play goal.

King finished with nine shots while Gould had four. As a team the Monarchs put 27 shots on goal, their second-highest total of the season. Gracen Mahoney and Kellie Munro were strong in the faceoff circle as Munro won 11 of her 15 attempts and Mahoney won 15 of 33 faceoffs. Zeveney made 18 saves in the first, 22 in the second, and 16 saves in the third period for her second-most saves of the year.

Rowland led the Cougars with a goal and two assists while Block recorded three assists. Carr added a goal and an assist. Strachan was very god in goal making 27 saves including 14 in the second period.

The Cougars were 2-for-6 on the power play in the game and were very effective at killing off seven Monarchs power play opportunities.

The teams will finish up the weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. back on the ice at Revolution Ice Centre.
