Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Gould Scores For Women’s Ice Hockey Against Chatham Saturday

PITTSTON, PA (January 26, 2019) – There are times when a box score doesn't really show the full picture of how a game is played. Saturday's women's ice hockey contest between King's College and Chatham University in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) showdown would be a example of that.

The box score would show Chatham (7-13-0, 4-9-0 UCHC) coming away with a 4-1 victory and holding a decisive 63-15 shot advantage. However, the numbers don't show how well the Monarchs (1-17-0, 0-13-0 UCHC) skated in the game while frustrating the Cougars for 60 minutes. The visiting Cougars got on the board early when they took advantage of a KC penalty in the first minute with Sydney Collins sixth goal of the season off an assist by Kerry Carr.

King's was able to even the score with a barrage of shots on net at 16:29 of the period as Maggie Gould knocked one past Devon Strachan in net to even the score at one. Gracen Mahoney and Meghan Mietlicki set up Gould for her third of her career. Two minutes later the Cougars would retake the lead as Kristina Block forced a turnover inside the blue line and found a streaking Danielle Bos up the center of the ice for the sophomore's third goal of the season.

The Monarchs came out of the intermission strong and had a great second period but were unable to find an equalizer. Caitlin Redden and Erin King had great opportunities early in the period that were stopped by Strachan in goal. Kiva Sierra Stoltz and the Monarch defense kept the deficit at one not allowing Chatham a goal in the period. Stoltz stopped all 16 shots she saw in the period.
The Cougars were able to find the back of the net 4:56 into the third period as Collins scored her second of the game off assists by Block and Carr. Block and Collins then teamed up for the final goal of the game with 4:49 left as Block scored her third goal of the season.

Stoltz had another strong performance as the sophomore finished with a season-high 59 saves. The Monarch defense blocked 18 shots. Gould tallied her third goal of the season on three shots. Mahoney recorded her team-leading seventh point on an assist and won 13 of 21 faceoffs. Mietlicki had another strong defensive performance as the freshman blocked four shots and recorded her first career point on an assist. Erin King also had a good game for the Monarch defense blocking four shots.

Collins finished with three points on two goals and an assist while taking 12 shots for the Cougars while Block recorded a goal and two assists while also recording 12 shots. Carr added two assists. Strachan made 14 saves to pick up her fifth win of the season in goal.

After allowing a goal on the first penalty of the game, King's was excellent on the penalty kill as they successfully killed off five other power play opportunities. The Cougars were called for two penalties and did not allow a goal in King's only power play opportunity of the afternoon.

The Monarchs will have a couple days off before being back in action on Tuesday night when they will travel back up to Pine Valley, New York to face top-ranked Elmira College in a game that was rescheduled due to last weekend's storm. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena.
