PINE VALLEY, NY (January 29, 2019) – The King's College women's ice hockey team faced a tough task heading into their Tuesday afternoon United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) matchup at top-ranked Elmira College. The host Soaring Eagles lived up to the ranking with a 16-0 victory at the Murray Ice Arena.
King's was without captain
Gracen Mahoney on the ice which made the task of taking on the national title contenders even more daunting. The Monarchs (1-18-0, 0-14-0 UCHC) responded with a valiant fight against the Soaring Eagles.
Elmira (16-2-1,12-0-0 UCHC), coming off a big weekend sweep of William Smith, used a complete team effort to score six goals in the first and then five goals each in the second and third periods. The Soaring Eagles kept the pressure on the Monarchs all game using their third-ranked offense and third-ranked defense to keep the puck in their offensive zone for most of the game.
The Monarch defensive did an excellent job keeping Katie Granato, a candidate for National Player of the Year, in check the whole game limiting the senior to just one shot and one assist. The Soaring Eagles got contributions from their whole team as all 19 skaters recorded at least one point.
Maddie Evangelous led the way with three goals while Emma Crocker had two goals and two assists. Amanda Zenstein recorded four points on a goal and three assists while Meg Lahey and Kiana Melvin tallied three assists each. Elmira held a 72-3 shot advantage in the game with freshman Elizabeth Hanson making all three saves in net to pick up her second win of the year and first career shutout.
Caitlin Redden,
Morgan Almon, and
Alexa Kovaly each recorded a shot for the Monarchs.
Kellie Munro did a great job as Mahoney's replacement as King's primary center by winning 13 of 27 attempts.
Kiva Sierra Stoltz and
Emma Zeveney split time in goal making a combined 56 saves. The Monarch defense did a great job blocking an additional 18 shots. Stoltz allowed six goals and made 20 saves in 27:16 minutes of work while Zeveney made 36 saves on 46 shots in 32:44 minutes of action.
The Monarchs will be back at Revolution this weekend for a pair of home games against Anna Maria College on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Friday night's puck drop will be at 7 p.m. while Saturday will start at 2 p.m. in Pittston.
