WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 5, 2019) – Visiting Lycoming College used a 28-4 run over the first 10 minutes of the game to pull away as the King's College women's basketball team fell for the first time at home this season with a 77-55 defeat to the Warriors in non-conference play from McGrane Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Playing at home for the first time in exactly a month, the Monarchs (7-6) couldn't get the offense rolling in the first quarter. On the flip side, the Warriors (11-4) could do no wrong in the opening stanza, shooing 72.2 percent (13-18) from the floor while scoring 22 of the period's 28 points in the paint.
King's rallied in the second quarter, playing a much more composed game against the 1-3-1 zone of Lycoming. The Monarchs finished the period on a 7-0 run, pulling to within 14 just before the break on a lay-up from
Mackenzie Yori to make it a 37-23 game going into the locker room. King's shot 47 percent in the second quarter and held Lyco to just two points around the rim to pull closer.
After the intermission, Lycoming's offense once again was clicking as it drilled 4-of-6 from behind the arc while shooting 52.6 overall in the period to grow its lead back up to 23 through 30 minutes. King's got the lead down to 20 a pair of times in the fourth but would get no closer in falling to the Warriors for the fourth straight time in the all-time series.
Senior
Alexis Steeber had another solid performance for the Monarchs, as she finished with a team-high 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Steeber also lead King's on the glass with six rebounds, while Yori totaled 14 points, connecting on two of her three shots from three-point land. Junior
Rebecca Prociak finished with nine points and four rebounds, while
Lindsey Dippre chalked up eight points, three assists and two rebounds.
King's shot 37.5 percent (24-64) from the floor on the afternoon, taking only four free throws on the contest. The four free throw attempts for King's was its fewest in a game since taking only three against FDU-Florham back on February 3, 2016. Freshman
Emily Kriston also added five points in 16 minutes off the bench for the Monarchs.
Kayla Kline led all scorers with 17 points, making 7-of-11 from the field, while adding a game-high 11 rebounds in the win. Becca Painter was 4-of-6 from deep en route to 16 points, and Erica Lutz and Akilah McFadden each finished with 15 points as well for the Warriors. Lycoming shot 50.8 percent on field goal attempts Saturday, while taking advantage of King's 13 turnovers with 21 points off giveaways.
The Monarchs will return to Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action Wednesday evening, taking on Manhattanville College (11-1, 2-0 MAC Freedom) at 8 p.m. in Purchase, NY.
