PURCHASE, NY (January 9, 2019) – The King's College men's basketball team outscored host Manhattanville College 43-30 in the second half but couldn't overcome a first-half deficit as the Monarchs dropped a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest 80-65 in the final road conference trip to Manhattanville.
King's (2-12, 0-3 MAC Freedom) outshot its hosts on Wednesday evening, and each team finished with 22 made field goals, but the Valiants benefitted from 40 free throw attempts while going 75 percent from the charity stripe which proved to be the difference.
Turnovers were also problematic for the Monarchs on Wednesday, as King's gave the ball away 32 times which led to 29 points off turnovers in the contest. The turnovers also led to break outs for the Valiants (7-7, 1-2 MAC Freedom), who posted a 22-6 edge in fast break points.
King's fell behind 8-0 early before junior
Andrew Hudak got the Monarchs on the board with a lay-up at the 17:11 mark of the first half. Down 15-10 with 10:06 to play, the host Valiants posted a 12-0 run over the next 3:34 to take a 17-point edge. The lead would swell up to 28 at the half, as Jake Dunn hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give his squad a 50-22 lead at the break. In the stanza, King's shot 34.8 percent, but only took 23 shots due to the 23 turnovers.
The Monarchs would trim the lead down to 13 points with just over a minute to play after a triple from
Noah Tanner, but that was as close as King's would get in falling on the road. The three-hour road trip to Purchase for conference play is the final time the Monarchs will make the trek, as Manhattanville is leaving the MAC Freedom at the end of the 2018-19 year.
Tanner finished with a team-high 16 points, scoring 14 in the second half, as he was 5-of-10 from the floor including making all five of his shots from the charity stripe. Freshman
JJ Glinsky came off the bench in the second half to play 18 of the 20 minutes, scoring all 14 of his points in the closing period, going 3-of-6 from the floor and 7-of-7 from the line.
Hadak also posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, his second double-double of the season and the fourth game this season with 10 or more boards.
Joe Lonardi added five points and nine rebounds for King's, which out-rebounded its hosts 48-42 on the contest. King's held MAC Freedom leading scorer Sean Smith to just 10 points, as he was 1-of-12 from the floor and 0-of-8 from deep.
JoJo Cobbs led the way for Manhattanville with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Connor Yetman and Mike Ryan each posted 10 points apiece. Dunn finished with 11 points as well for Manhattanville, while was 22-of-63 (34.9 percent) from the field while going 23.1 percent (6-26) from behind the arc.
King's will host FDU-Florham Saturday at 3 p.m. in MAC Freedom action in McGrane Gymnasium in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
