King’s Women’s Soccer Drops Conference Battle With DeSales

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 15, 2019) --- The visiting DeSales University women's soccer team scored three times in the last 20 minutes of the first half to defeat King's College 4-0 on Tuesday evening from McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.

The Bulldogs (11-2-1, 2-0-1 MAC Freedom) started the match with a couple shots on goal in the opening minutes. Monarch keeper Tara Bender made a fantastic save to her left on a shot to the bottom right from inside the box by Rachel Medlar and then corralled a header by Medlar to the bottom left on the following corner kick. King's (6-7-1, 1-2-0 MAC Freedom) settled down defensively after those two early strikes and didn't allow another shot on goal for another 20 minutes.

While the defense started to play well against the Bulldog attack, the offense struggled to figured out a stingy DSU defense. Sam Riccardi got the Bulldogs on the board in the 26th minute with a header that found the lower left after the Monarchs attempted to clear the ball out of the box. Seven minutes later Sydney Amato doubled the lead when she found the back of the net with a nice one-timer off a cross by Sam Monteforte from the left side. Monteforte then increased the lead to 3-0 with 43 seconds remaining in the half as she knocked in her third goal of the year to the upper left as King's attempted to clear a corner kick into the box.

In the opening minutes of the second half Medlar tested Bender again to the top right but the sophomore keeper was able to make a nice save on the ball to keep the DSU advantage at three. KC countered with a Grace Conover shot from the top of the box that sailed just right of the goal after deflecting off a DSU defender in the 52nd minute. Following the corner kick, Breanna Jacinto made Lia Gaccione make a save on a ball to the top right on her shot from the inside the box on the right side. The Bulldogs were able to get the ball downfield and earned a corner kick late in the 54th minute. Meghan Corbran sent the kick into the box from the left side where Tess Rodgers received the ball and headed it into the upper right for the final goal of the match.

The Monarchs pressed for the final 35 minutes of the match but were not able to score against DSU. The Bulldogs finished the game with a 17-5 shot advantage while putting 13 shots on goal. Bender had a fantastic match in net as she did everything she could to stop the Bulldog shots. The sophomore was one save off her season and career high with nine. Conover played extremely well in defeat for the Monarchs putting one of her two total shots on goal while creating multiple chances down the right wing.

King's will return to the pitch on Saturday with a tough test as conference leader and newcomer Stevens Institute of Technology makes their first ever visit to McCarthy Stadium for a 5 pm kickoff. The Ducks are ranked 20th in this week's United Soccer Coaches National Poll.
