WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 18, 2019) -- The King's College field hockey team led late in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest with Delaware Valley University, but the Aggies tallied twice in the fourth quarter to earn a 2-1 win over the Monarchs in action from McCarthy Stadium Friday evening.
Prior to the game, the Monarch field hockey team honored its lone senior
Jennifer Smalley, along with junior physician's assistant majors Brianna Maluda and
Lauren Rowski.
The visiting Aggies were strong out of the gate, taking play to the Monarchs while nearly scoring on a tipped shot by TJ Smith in the fourth minute. After that point, King's started to get its footing, and started to pour on the offense in the later part of the first quarter.
King's earned its best chance in the 14th minute, being awarded a penalty corner 12:53 into the contest. Junior
Lauren Rowski had a chance off the penalty corner, and her shot would have gone but it was stopped by a defender behind the keeper with a foot to give King's a penalty stroke. On the ensuing stroke, Rowski fired the attempt to her left but it clanged off the post and out.
King's kept the pressure on DelVal, and was rewarded as freshman
Sara Whitesell tapped in a pass from
Jolee Treslar off of a corner to put King's up 1-0. It was the sixth goal of the season for Whitesell.
In the 21st minute, King's nearly doubled its lead as
Bailey Jordan had two point blank shots but Rosie Bishop denied both in addition to a third shot from
Danielle Runo. The game would go to halftime at 1-0 in favor of King's, as the Monarchs outshot DelVal 9-1 in the second period.
After the halftime intermission, neither team could get anything going in the third with a combined zero corners and only three shots by the Aggies.
Delaware Valley would knot the score in the 47th minute shortly into the fourth quarter, as Samantha Collyer had her first attempt from right on the goal line saved before tucking a second shot into the cage for the tally.
The Monarchs would push the ball back into their offensive zone in the 53rd minute and earned four straight penalty corners but only managed two shots on the chances as the game continued tied at a goal apiece.
Only two minutes after the flurry by the Monarchs, DelVal took its first lead of the game as Gillian Nardelli pushed in her own rebound at 55:22 for the eventual game-winner.
The win for Delaware Valley was its first victory over the Monarchs since the 2013 season, snapping King's five-match win streak over the Aggies.
The Monarchs (5-10, 1-3 MAC Freedom) will look to snap its three-match losing skid on Wednesday, hosting Wilkes University October 23 at 7 p.m. for the final home game of the 2019 season.
