Monarchs Start Weekend with Road Win

LA  PLUME, PA (October 18, 2019) -- To start their three-match weekend, King's College women's volleyball team defeating the host Giants of Keystone College, 3-0, to improve to 18-3 on the season. The Monarchs presented another balanced effort, as three Monarchs totaled double-digit digs, led by sophomore Wiatt Hoffmann who recorded her fourth double-double of the season.

King's jumped to an early 8-3 lead in this match behind two kills by sophomore Cleo Schultz, kills by freshman Marta Pawka and sophomores Becca Goldberg and Olivia Bunch, and two block assists both by Schultz and Goldberg. The Giants responded with a run of their own, 8-2, to take the lead, 11-10. The remainder of the first set saw both teams trade points as neither team led by more than one point before King's took a two-point lead, 20-18, to force a Keystone timeout. Then, the Giants came out of the timeout with a 3-1 run to tie the match yet again, 21-21, before the Monarchs scored four of the last six points of the set to take a 1-0 lead.

Keystone rallied in set two, taking an early 3-1, before King's scored five unanswered points led by sophomore Christie Brown with two kills. The battle continued as the teams traded points again as King's took a 13-12 lead. Then, the Monarchs scored four straight points off two service aces by sophomore Taylor Mueller and two Giants errors. Both teams scored eight points over the final stretch of set two before posting the set final, 25-21.

The final set was controlled by the Monarchs as they opened the set on a 5-0 run. The Giants would continue to battle as they inched within one on four different occasions before King's ended the match on a 12-3 run to sweep Keystone, 3-0.

Hoffmann led with 23 assists and 11 digs for the Monarchs. For the offense, Goldberg totaled a game-high 12 kills on 26 attempts and committing just one error, hitting .423 for the match. Mueller anchored the defense with a team-high 18 digs while adding all six of the Monarchs' service aces, and sophomore Grace Frati recorded 10 digs. The Monarchs were excellent at the net again as Goldberg and Schultz both added four block assists, and sophomore Danielle Kitchner totaled 3 solo blocks.

As a team, the Monarchs held the advantage in blocks (8-4) and digs (60-48). They also hit .168 as a team compared to Keystone's .095 for the match.

The Monarchs have a quick turn around as they are set to host their final home matches of the year as they face Medgar Evers College at 11:00 am and The College at Old Westbury at 3:00 pm in a tri-match in McGrane Gymnasium.
