WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 19, 2019) -- The King's College men's swimming team got things going for the 2019-20 season in fine fashion Saturday, topping visiting Marywood University 187.5-55.5 in action from Scandlon Pool.
The Monarchs (1-0) started the season with a strong outing from the "A" relay int he 200-yard medley relay, as sophomores
Joel Williams and
Kris Boxter teamed with
Christopher Dionne and freshman
Ryan Bixler to swim a 1:44.94 for the win. The "B" relay of
Erik Aguero,
Matt Lowry,
Thomas Montvydas and
Andrew Johnson was second with a 1:50.76.
The longest race of the day would follow, and the Monarchs earned another victory, this time seeing freshman
Jared Stephan dominate the field in the 1000 free, swimming a 10:20.83 to win by over two minutes.
The 200 freestyle was another strong showing for the Monarchs, as Bixler picked up his first solo win of his career at King's, posting a 1:55.77 while Johnson was second with a 2:09.93.
King's continued to rack up points in the 50 backstroke, as Williams and Aguero went 1-2, chalking up times of 27.54 and 29.29, respectively. The 50 breaststroke saw Boxter add another win to his ledger, winning by nearly two seconds with a 28.64.
In the 100 butterfly, Dionne registered his first win of the season, as the senior swam a 57.07 to just edge out Montvydas for the win. Chris Boucher completed the 1-2-3 finish in the event for the Monarchs with a 1:00.15.
In the 50 free, Bixler chalked up another victory, out-touching Bobby Wishart of Marywood with a 24.24.
The 100 freestyle would be another 1-2 finish for the Monarchs, as Dionne chalked up another victory with a 51.52 and Bixler came in just behind him with a 51.91. Boxter would finish the day yet another win in the 100 breaststroke, as he won by more than three seconds with 1:03.91. Sophomore
Matt Lowry also posted a 1:08.59 to finish third.
Stephan was back in action for the 500 freestyle following the 100 breast, and for the second time on the day was dominant in a win. The freshman posted a 5:06.37 to earn the win, while Chris Boucher was also strong in a second-place finish posting a 5:25.94.
In the 50 fly, Montvydas picked up his first individual win of the year, tying for the win with Kyle Calamia of Marywood after the pair swam an identical 26.64. Stephan registered his third and final win of the meet in the 200 IM, outracing his teammate
Erik Aguero to earn the victory with a 2:06.65. Aguero was second with a 2:17.51.
The last event of the day was once again a Monarch win, as King's earned a win in every event contested Saturday as the "A" relay of Dionne, Williams, Montvydas and Stephan recorded a 1:35.50 for the 11 points. The "B" relay was right behind them in second place, as
Alex Schwartz, Boucher, Boxter and Johnson swam a 1:42.47.
The Monarchs will be back in action Saturday, October 26 at Cabrini University in Radnor, PA.
