DeSales Trips Up King's Field Hockey To End 2019 Season

CENTER VALLEY, PA (October 30, 2019) -- The 2019 King's College field hockey team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday evening, falling to host DeSales University 3-0 on a rainy night from the DSU Turf Field.

The Monarchs (6-12, 2-5 MAC Freedom) were eliminated from contention for the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament with the loss, but would have needed help regardless of the finish at DeSales. That point became moot as King's couldn't get much going until the third quarter.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime after a Sarah Peterson goal on a penalty corner for DSU, King's started to get things going in the third quarter. In the 36th minute, King's looked to have gotten on the board, but shots from Hannah Robbins and Danielle Runo had attempts from close in stopped by Bulldog keeper Katarina Polyviou.

After the Monarchs were assessed a green card, King's continued to get some solid chances but a pair of shots by junior Lauren Rowski were again denied. Junior Brianne Maluda made two big stops late in the period to send the game to the fourth quarter within striking distance for the Monarchs.

In the final period, DeSales once again cashed in on a penalty corner as Leah Echard inserted and eventually tapped in a loose ball to make it 2-0. The Bulldogs tacked on another goal with less than two minutes to play to clinch the win.

The contest was the final game in a Monarch jersey for junior Brianne Maluda and Lauren Rowski, along with senior Jennifer Smalley. Smalley was the last remaining player from the 2016 MAC Freedom Tournament championship team.

DeSales outshot the Monarchs 8-6 on the contest, while both Maluda and Polyviou stopped three shots apiece. DeSales also held a slight 9-6 edge in penalty corners.
