PINE VALLEY, NY (November 10, 2019) --- Junior goaltender
Emma Zeveney made a career high 69 saves as the King's College women's ice hockey team gave the third-ranked Elmira College Soaring Eagles a tough battle in a 6-0 defeat on Sunday afternoon from Pine Valley, New York.
All six of Elmira's goals were scored on special teams as Zeveney stifled the highly ranked Eagles all afternoon. The hosts dominated puck possession in the first period but the Monarchs (0-2-0, 0-2-0 UCHC) played very well defensively as Zeveney made 29 stops while facing 31 shots. EC (2-0-0, 2-0-0 UCHC) scored on both power play opportunities they had in the period. Emma Crocker knocked home her third goal of the season with 12:02 left in the period as the Monarchs were just 15 seconds away from killing off the penalty. The hosts made it 2-0 with 2:40 left in the period as Devyn Gilman redirected a shot by Crocker into the back of the net for her second goal of the season 1:21 into King's second penalty kill of the game.
The Monarchs came out of the break and played the Soaring Eagles a little more evenly in the first 10 minutes of the second period. The Monarch defense continued their stifling defense while at full strength however EC took advantage of four Monarchs penalties with three power play goals. Tristen Tolan scored her first goal of the season midway through the period as she tapped in the puck from the front of the crease. Jess Adams made it 4-0 a couple minutes later with her first goal of the year before Eliza Beuadin scored her fourth goal of the year with 2:42 remaining in the period.
King's best period was the third period as they killed off two early penalties while going back and forth on the ice with the Eagles. Elmira scored their sixth goal of the game with 5:36 left as Holly Riva scored a shorthanded goal after Gilman stole the puck inside the blue line and sent a cross ice pass to Riva on the left side of the crease.
Elmira finished the game with five power play goals in nine opportunities while putting 26 shots on goal with the extra woman advantage. The Eagles successfully killed all five Monarch power plays. Zeveney stopped 69 of the 75 shots she faced making 29 saves in the first period, 18 in the second, and then 22 in the third. Her previous high was 58 saves in the 2017-18 season finale at Utica.
The Monarch defense blocked an additional 31 shots by the Eagles as sophomore
Meghan Mietlicki led the way with six.
Erin King blocked five shots while
Josée Aitken and
Tessa Schaefer-Flynn blocked three each.
Kelly Tuffy,
Ali Noeding,
Raeann Clancey,
Morgan Almon,
Emma Knoll,
Mary Deyell, and
Caitlin Redden each blocked two shots for King's. Aitken also led the Monarchs in the faceoff circle with 12 wins in 28 attempts.
Eight different Soaring Eagles recorded a point led by Crocker and Gilman with one goal and two assists apiece. The duo were also the top Eagles in the faceoff circle as Crocker went 16-5 and Gilman went 10-3 in the circle. Elizabeth Hanson make five saves in goal to earn the victory.
King's will look to continue their strong play to start the season next weekend in the team's first home games. The Monarchs will host Utica College at Revolution Ice Centre on Friday night at 7 pm before welcoming Nazareth to town on Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 pm against the Golden Flyers.
