WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 12, 2019) -- Sophomore
Samantha Rajza recorded a triple-double as she helped lead five in double-digits. The King's College women's basketball team dominated, as they defeated the visiting Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy University, 107-75, as they improve to 2-0 on the season. King's also surpassed the 100-point mark for the first time since the last mark was recorded on February 9, 1997 against Cabrini University.
Gwynedd Mercy started the game on a 4-0 run before Rajza started her career night, scoring the first five points for the Monarchs. With the high-paced first quarter, King's was able to build a 13-point lead, 27-14. The Monarchs continued to roll, leading by as much as 28 points in the first half, as Rajza seemingly had an impact on every play before the Monarchs posted the half time score, 57-33, as they headed into the locker room.
The second half started with a jumper by sophomore
Emily Kriston as King's continued to build their lead, 66-41. Then both teams went scoreless over the next 1:30 before a layup by Tamia Wessels sparked both offenses. The speed of the game allowed the Monarchs to run the floor in transition while finding the open player, whether in the paint or beyond the arc, as they led by as much as 34 before ending the third quarter leading 84-56.
King's out-scored Gwynedd Mercy 23-19 over the final quarter before posting the final tally. The 100-point basket came with 3:07 remaining in the game as Rajza grabbed the defensive rebound and found senior
Mackenzie Yori in transition for the layup.
Rajza led the game with 31 points, scoring 29 in the first half, and shooting 11-20 for the game including 6-8 from three-point land. She added 14 rebounds and 10 assists to capture the milestone. Senior
Rebecca Prociak recorded a double-double as she totaled 18 points and 15 rebounds, adding three assists and three blocks. Senior
Mackenzie Yori also filled the stat sheet with 16 points with six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Other top Monarchs for the game were freshman
Emily Morano who totaled 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and seven rebounds in her collegiate debut, and Kriston who continued her excellence play with 13 points, seven assists, and five rebounds.
As a team, the Monarchs shot 44.2 percent from the field in the win, including 40.0 percent from beyond the arc and 74.2 percent from the charity stripe. King's pulled down 74 rebounds and dished out 29 assists on 38 made field goals. The Monarchs also totaled 54 points in the paint compared to the Griffins 38 while also holding the advantage in transition points, 47-25.
The Monarchs will take a quick break before returning to action next Wednesday, November 20 as they travel to Lycoming College for their first road test of the season, starting at 7:00 p.m.
