Monarchs Fall to Nazareth On Saturday

PITTSTON, PA (November 16, 2019) --- Nazareth College had big first and third periods to defeat the King's College women's ice hockey team 10-0 on Saturday afternoon from Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.

The Golden Flyers (6-1-0, 2-1-0 UCHC) entered the weekend receiving votes in the top 10 poll and were the second team out of the rankings. Nazareth also holds the second-highest scoring offense in Division III scoring 6.29 goals per game and the ninth-best defense allowing just 0.71 goals per game.

The visitors came out strong against the Monarchs (0-4-0, 0-4-0 UCHC) scoring four times in the first period. King's held their own early on as Emma Zeveney denied the first six shots of the game in the opening five minutes. Keeley Rose managed to score at 7:24 with her fourth goal of the year to give Nazareth the lead. The Golden Flyers scored twice in a 31-second span to increase their lead in the 14th minute. Morgan Leuenberger then tallied her first goal of the season with 2:52 left in the period to send the visitors to the locker room with a 4-0 advantage.

King's came out and had a strong second period where they killed off a 5-on-3 advantage. The Golden Flyers had a two-woman advantage on the ice for 1:36 as KC was called for two penalties within 24 seconds of each other. Nazareth scored their only goal of the period with nine minutes left as Mikaila Rubin scored her first goal of the year. The third period began with a NC goal 33 seconds in by Nikolle Van Stralen. The Golden Flyers would score four more times in the period to set the final score.

Van Stralen led the Flyers with two goals and two assists while winning 12 of 16 faceoffs. Madison Nichols scored twice while Rubin recorded three points on a goal and two assists. 12 total skaters recorded a point for NC and Noelle Giroux made seven saves to earn her third shutout in three games played this season.

Kateri Heithaus and Maggie Gould took two shots each for King's while Raeann Clancey blocked a team-high 14 shots. Zeveney stopped 48 of the 55 shots she faced before Kiva Sierra Stoltz relieved her in goal in the final period. The Monarchs were called for six penalties in the game and were successful on five of the six penalty kills.

The Monarchs will look to rebound next weekend when they travel up to Marlborough, MA for a two-game series against Anna Maria College. KC and the Amcats will square off on Friday evening from the New England Sports Center at 7 pm before the series finale on Saturday at 2:30 pm.
