MARLBOROUGH, MA (November 22, 2019) --- The host Anna Maria College Amcats women's ice hockey team scored the only goal of the game in the third period to defeat King's College 1-0 in the first of a two-game weekend series on Friday evening from the New England Sports Center.
In a tightly contest affair, AMC picked up their first win of the season on a short-handed goal scored by Sophia Zimmerman 4:53 into the third period. The Monarchs received a valiant effort in goal by
Kiva Sierra Stoltz who made 41 saves while facing 42 shots. King's took 29 shots in the game led by assistant captain
Erin King with five. King had a chance to even the game just before time expired, but her shot was kept out of the back of the net by Julia Smith.
The Monarchs struggled with penalties as they racked up 24 penalties minutes on eight penalties. However, KC was a perfect six-for-six on the penalty kill. Anna Maria was called for three penalties and killed off both Monarch power plays.
Morgan Almon and
Kateri Heithaus recorded four shots each while
Ali Noeding had three. Josee Aitken won a team-high 12 faceoffs.
Grace Dodge had the assist on the game-winning goal for AMC and won 19 of the 30 faceoffs she took. Smith made 29 saves to pick up the victory in net.
The teams will conclude the two-game series tomorrow afternoon starting at 2:30 pm from the New England Sports Center.
